SEQ AFL girls highlights: Milestone matches; five goal haul

SEQ AFL girls under 17 footy: There were milestone moments galore; a Gold Coast derby and a Maroochydore five goal haul in highlights from the weekend.

Tweed Coolangatta won a Gold Coast derby over Southport while Maroochydore’s Marlee Marshall kicked five goals in SEQ AFL under 17 girls footy at the weekend.

And there was also a milestone moment at Yeronga where the Devils Ila Steeler played her 100th match, and Victoria Point’s Jess Riley her 50th match for the Sharks. More on those milestones match below.

While Wilston Grange’s Issy Colebourne played her 50th game for the club.

QAFL’S ROUND 16 MATCH REPORT, BEST PLAYERS

Maroochy full forward Marshall was on fire, soaring against the Sandgate Hawks to kick a bagful of goals, while in Div 2 Morningside’s Chloe McNeven kicked five goals in her team’s win.

And in yet another milestone moment, Burleigh Bombers captain Bronte Parker was best on ground against Coorparoo with a huge midfield performance that saw her wrack up a huge amount of disposals and kick three goals. More below.

But the Roos were no one woman band, with coach Arron Yates praising his team’s backline for the third week in a row.

He also praised Zali Bubb, Lataya Deqauw, Billie Missen and Katie Kerr who won the ball around the centre bounces.

And Broadbeach had a hard fought win, with big guns Dekota and Harriet leading the charge with elite over head marking while the Cats backline also stood firm.

“It was a hard fought contest and very competitive,’’ said Cats coach James Dofter.

“I was happy with the four quarter performance starting to build toward the finals, but we just need to work on a couple of areas heading into the back end of the season.’’

Tweed Coolangatta also had a win over Southport the previous round, with Aleah Stringer continuing her magnificent form kicking three goals as a rotating midfielder, while Allira Palmucci was a key target up forward. She also kicked three goals.

“It was another good game from the girls against Southport,’’ said coach Dave Palmucci.

“We had plenty of footy inside our forward 50 early but only took a few of those chances.

“To Southport’s credit they moved the ball really well, changing angles and hitting targets in a tight first half.

“The second half saw us open up the play with more run and carry and burst from congestion. “Our defence was rock solid as usual. repelling plenty of attacks and we became more effective going forward.

“In the last quarter we managed to convert our chances and kick clear in the end.

“It’s going to be an exciting run home to the finals in a very tight competition.’’

“Even though it was fourth v 12th, the game was competitive and the scores didn’t reflect how even the game was,’’ said Southport co-coach Marcus Gazsik.

Yeronga’s Ila Steeler played her 100th game which coach Jessie Baltus said was “an awesome achievement as she also had a blind for us in the mid-field’’.

Despite the loss coach Baltus said “we won a lot of contested footy and got the ball going forward for us,’’ Baltus said.

“Best players were Streeter, Sophie Dunne, Eliza Haigh, Sienna Wilson and Kiara Dunlop.’’

Victoria Point celebrated Riley’s 50 game milestone with a 6-7-43 to 2-113 win over Sherwood.

“The girls were extra motivated to play well,’’ said Vic coach Trevor Mayhew.

“Sherwood jumped us early playing good, hard contested footy.

“My girls were playing well but found it hard to score against the Magpies defence.

“Eventually in the second quarter we managed to get the scoreboard moving our way but were made battle for every possession.

“The second half was hard fought. We were happy to come away with the win.’’

Best players were Tiani Sassen, Hannah Cook, Clara Cooke, Tiara Steel, Harriety Knijff, Lily Beveridge, Chloe Campbell, Mia Tempest and Georgie Hunt.

Sherwood coach Chris Bloor heaped praise on Zoe and Hayley Tame who were excellent in defence, along with Audrey Pickup who was creative on the wing.

Impressive Burleigh also had a good win, beating a trying Coorparoo outfit by 81 points.

“We matched them in the first quarter which showed how Cooparoo can play against the better teams, but Burleigh have got the legs to play out four quarters,’’ said Roos coach Scott Harrison.

Mids Sienna Ibrahim, Ava Ambler and Lyla Harrison rose to the occasion while Harrison said Emma Bracegirdle was moved into defence and did a good job.

“They are a team which will go well into the finals,’’ Harrison praised.

“All of Coorparoo players didn’t drop their heads and fought until the final sirenin which we were very proud of.’’

Burleigh coach Em Otto said skipper Parker helped drive her team with a serious of repeat efforts.

Wests Juniors had a 61-8 win over Wilston Grange, with Gorillas coach Jamie Sceney heaping praise on Wests.

“They clearly wanted the ball more, ran harder and worked together as a team.

“We on the other hand looked like we were still on holidays and lacked intensity across the park.’’

However, Amelia Turnbull earned high praise for “providing spark across half forward, Tayla Simpson toiled away down back while Emma Hibberson and Sophia Allen shouldered ruck duties.’’

Mia Geere also gave her side much needed run out of defence at times.

Wests Juniors coach said the side had great contributors everywhere including midfield players Claudia Dargie, Eva Sartor, April Fischer, Edie McCabe and Daisy Lythgo providing options up forward, while Nikkie Shaw and Sammy Snowden could not be passed down back.

“After having only 11-14 players available for the last few rounds, it was great to get a full team back on the park,’’ coach Mark McCabe said.

In Div 2 action, Mt Gravatt-Jindalee were beaten by a better side against Kenmore and despite the visitors willing effort, they had trouble connecting both in defence and attack

Sophie Hosack never gave up there was one instance in the back line where she was in a one vs two and Kenmore players kept turning up, she kept battling up to about six players until she caused a stoppage,’’ praised coach Damien King.

Taneka Dhandi kept tying all day she put that much effort in that when she was running and took a bounce it went over her head.

Jessica Hendry gave it her all, all day playing a slightly different role with midfield minutes.

Tahlia Butcher had a go up forward and kept presenting and trying to stop Kenmore exits.’’

After back to back losses Morningside were desperate to get back on the winners list, and after a sluggish start powered to a comfortable win.

Palm Beach started strongly, kicking the first two goals of the game,, but after quarter time the Panthers settled into its structures, building three strong quarters to take the points.

“We put together some of our best passages of play for the season so far, so I’m enthused that we can build on that as we lead towards a potential finals spot,’’ said coach Alan McGrath.

“It was a very even team performance, but some stand out efforts included a season high five goals from Chloe McNeven, while Eden Taylor was dominant in the ruck, and Isabelle Bailey and Amelia Cran were excellent with their transitional work rate all day.
