The flame flickers for Aspley Hornets, the Surfers Paradise surge is while Palm Beach Currumbin claimed the win of the weekend after another exciting round.

Broadbeach surged in the last quarter but it was not enough to overrun PBC which broke the game open in the second term. PBC won by 10 points.

On the premiership table Palm Beach Currumbin, Maroochydore, dark horses Wilston Grange and Sherwood, along with the big Cats, Broadbeach, all fill the top five placings.

Two wins outside the top five were Aspley (24) with a percentage of 132.57, followed by Surfers Paradise (24) and eight placed Morningside (20).

Aspley coach Brett Atkins said “consistent work on the training track’’ and consistency on the team’s processes and structure during games had contributed to turning the Hornets season around.

“The key is to continue to work on basic fundamentals,’’ Atkins said.

Surfers Paradise coach Alistair Mitchell said of his team’s win over Labrador: “I was just really happy with the team effort and composure.

“To have 48 inside 50s with 30 scoring shots was great.

“But it was a great defensive effort and team structure that was most pleasing.

“We have a number of injured lads who need the rest so the bye (this weekend) has come at a great time for us.’’

Under 17 Div 1 eligible Proud was tremendous in the ruck for the Hornets while also snaring plenty of contested marks around the ground.

Heath Seadon (Mt Gravatt)

The Vultures’ midfielder presented all day and did not lose a contest. He gave Mt Gravatt opportunities up forward.

Zac Grills (Aspley)

Grills displayed great defensive work running off the half back.

Beau Lester-Sutherland, Nelson Beikoff-Smart, Oliver Allingham, Charles Elliott, Ezekiel Stortenbeker, Mitchell Day (PBC)

Under 17 Div 1 eligible player Beau Lester-Sutherland and the impressive Nelson Beikoff-Smart continue to fire, but they had plenty of helpers in a game which resembled a knockout final.

Bryce Slattery and Kenan Sertli (Aspley)

Slattery’s forward line pressure was instrumental in the team performance while Kenan displayed great understanding around the forward line and hit the scoreboard with two goals.

Jake Selvey and Ali Al-Babhan (Surfers Paradise)

Selvey was brilliant on ball, giving Surfers Paradise first use of the ball along with Ali Al-Babhan in the ruck.

Tyler Whiteley, Deklen Faulkner, Riley McMillan, Bailey Hahn, Koby Young, Takoda Boltong (Maroochydore)

Deklen Faulkner continues to lead the charge for a very impressive Roos but Maroochydore had plenty of other good players as well at the weekend.

This awesome foursome were loyal guardsmen across the backline against a willing Wilston Grange eager to rebound from a shock round 13 loss.

Catanese was strong down back and completed well through the midfield.

Voss Baguga (Mt Gravatt)

A strong midfield player, he worked hard all game and won his fair share of the ball.

Backman Sherlock-Clark contested strongly in the air and at ground level.

Leo Johnston (Labrador)

Johnston won his own footy through the midfield and always gives 100 percent.

Ryley Egan, Zane Pearce and Hugo Crawford (Morningside)

Pearce continued to gather player of the year points for the Panthers while Egan and Crawford were also top three players.

More coaches comments

Wilston Grange coach Darren Fazldeen said his squad’s depth had expanded with players returning from injury. “We have had some boys comeback which helps us to get back to our style of playing.

“It was a great response (after last weekend’s shock loss to Mt Gravatt) and I am a very happy coach.

Noosa coach Jed Costagen said his team fought hard despite defeat and heap praise on the backline effort.

Sherwood coach Ben Jaenke-Cain said the key to his team’s good mid-season position was “keep playing consistently no matter who we have in or missing’’.

Rob Yoannidis of Labrador said his young side continued to battle away against bigger bodies in the opposition.

Morningside coach Ross Anderson said the key to his team turning a competitive loss into a win was being cleaner with handling.

Broadbeach coach Lewis Chiodo said his team needed a four term effort, and not a two quarter performance, to beat PBC.

“Four quarters win games, not two. We had another eight changes from weekend to week to that is great exposure,’’ he said.
