Four 15-year-olds rose to the occasion as Wilston Grange beat the giant-killing Maroochydore in SEQ AFL under 17 girls footy on Sunday.

Around classy ruck Sophia Allen, five goal hero Eva Sceney and the sturdy Chloe Delfore, Wilston Grange also had a host of kids who made the most of their promotion into a higher age group.

But two of their under 15 teammates also shone, with Francesca Davy (midfield) and Bella Redpath (wing) making a great fist of the occasion - and along with Surfers’ 15-year-old Tara Nieass (see report in this story), it was a great weekend for the youngsters.

Wilston Grange Coach Jamie Sceney said his team jumped the Roos in the first term to kick four goals which ended up being around the margin.

“We competed hard at the ball as a team and the under 15s helped us out.

“And some of those younger girls were not out of their depth at all and looked like they belonged. We battled under fatigue and deserved to win.’’

Maroochydore, big winners last week in a thriller against powerhouse Surfers Paradise, were slow out of the blocks.

The Roos got rolling, but could never bridge that early match gap.

For Maroochydore Jemma Foley from the backline, Katie Kerr in the middle and utility Sophie Schulze played strongly, with Schulze changing back and forth all match.

While the Wilston Grange v Roos clash featured an array of young guns, it was two of the competition’s big guns who excelled in Broadbeach’s seven goal win over Sandgate.

Broadbeach won 8.8-56 to 2.4-16, with representative players Annabelle Foat and Dekota Baron showing their side the way to victory.

Baron was back to her normal self in the ruck and displayed great overhead marking while Foak’s link up ball work and beautiful handling fired the Cats from the middle.

Isla Dowd was also explosive for Broadbeach, displaying a great running capacity.

Broadbeach coach James Dofter said his team displayed good connection from the centre clearances, moved the ball well and produced some switch work.

“Our communication was also on point,’’ Dofter praised.

“And our pressure all around the field was good.’’

Hawks coach Shane Watterson said a second quarter fade out cost his side, with Broadbeach kicking five unanswered goals.

Tara Bettington put in a huge effort down back, while the midfield group of Montannah Fabian, Emmerson Brady, Kaetsi-Eva French and Vianne Stillman battled hard all day for the Hawks.

The Tweed Coolangatta Blues ensured an away trip to Coorparoo was worth the drive with a rousing win over spirited opposition at Giffin Park.

The Roos kept in touch courtesy of Ava Ambler’s quick snap close to the third quarter break

And another goal in the final term from Madison Pitman reduced the margin to 8-3-51 to 4-0-24.

But Tweed’s Izzy Boucher put it to bed with a textbook goal after a nice interchange of passing. The score ended up 11.6-72 to 4-0-24.

Overall Cooly’s coach David Palmucci watched his daughter Allira kick five goals as the forwards presented well and the midfield hit their targets.

She usually plays centre half back but went to centre half forward and enjoyed the opportunities.

Charlotte Foster also transferred from forward to wing and half back and shone with that exposure giving Cooly “really, really good drive’’.

Tayliah Edwards also played her best game for the club in a high class game.

Coorparoo’s best were Hannah Webb who played across the midfield, Maggie Fraser (defender), winger Eve Kirkwood and Monique Perry in the ruck.

On the Gold Coast, Burleigh Bombers had two goal margin against Sherwood, but by heavens the Magpies’ girls were not light years off a major upset.

In arguably the squad’s best performance of the season, Annabel Peacock and Gabbi Banks went the distance for Sherwood, but picking a best player was really like trying to work out your favourite grandchild.

“It was very hard to pick a best player,’’ said Sherwood coach Chris Bloor.

“We fought well, stayed in it, and with a few players out we were in it all day. But the better team won,’’ said Bloor.

Bombers coach Em Otto had high praise for her side given the quality of the Sherwood challenge.

“The girls played very well against a very strong opponent who were super clean all game.

“Our girls did well to hold their own and absorb Sherwood’s pressure.

“It was the girls repeats entries that eventually broke the game apart.’’

Otto said the midfield attack on the ball from Allie Cameron (wing) was superb. “She brought intensity and speed to every contest.’’

Surfers Paradise had a win over Victoria Point in what was a ripper of a clash.

“It was a nail biting finish,’’ said Surfers coach Chanel Fletcher.

Vic Point took the lead early, then lost the lead late but continued to fight on.

“We were depleted and played some under 15s but as a whole we were slow to start,’’ Fletcher said.

One of those 15s, Tara Nieass, was sensational for the winners.

“Her attack at the footy, brilliant ruck work and ability to win her own ruck tap was exactly what we needed,’’ Fletcher said.

“She rotated forward and back when not rucking and was a key player in creating the run and flow we needed to get the ball into our forward line.’’

Fletcher said Chaise Montey was easily her team’s most consistent player, with “her pressure and attack awesome’’.

Alice Minahan was damaging in the forward line and took some crucial marks and kicked goals. “Her tackling pressure and ability to lock it in was excellent.’’

Overall Vic Point were a well execute team who had great speed and attack at the footy, but we stuck to our plan which enabled us to take the lead with 10 minutes to go. IT was an amazing effort by all.’’

Sharks coach Trevor Mayhew described as a “good, competitive game of football’’.

“Our team started well before Surfers worked their way back into the game,’’ he said.

“In the third quarter we didn’t capitalise on the wind but all credit to Surfers who kicked straighter and took advantage of a couple of mistakes we made in defence.

“It was an exciting game of football which went to the wire.’’

Best for Vic Point were Mia Tempest, Georgia Hunt, Chloe Campbell, Clara Cooke and Harlee McIlwain.

Southport had a 61-21 win over Wests Juniors, with Wests battling hard early after starting with just 13 players.

Two injuries saw them down to 11, so it was a terrific effort from Wests.

“We matched them in the second half with two goals each,’’ a club spokesman said.

“It was a great team effort with some notable standouts.’’

Daisy Lythgow on her debut shone, and so did both Bailey Cooke and Claudie Dargie who worked hard all day.

Sammy Snowden in the backline also held that area of the field together.

Southport co-coach Marcus Gasik said it was “an amazing win by our girls’’. Her praised the team effort.

In Div 2, it was a cracking day for footy at Dittmer Park for round 3 of the Mags vs Morningside trilogy.

This time the MAGS came away with the win in a highly competitive local derby game of footy.

The game went the MAGS way early with Enah Desic and Lauren Norfolk providing defensive pressure around the contest allowing Jessica Williams and Shae Gordon some space to work in.

Morningside hit back hard in the second quarter which is to be expected for such a quality team.

From there it was a fairly even game with Tiana Limperakis damaging up forward and the mags defence keeping Morningside forward thrusts at bay thanks to Taneka Dhadlie and Jessica Hendry.

Goals: Tiana Limperakis 2, Shae Gordon, Jessica Williams, Jordyn Dornhart, Jade Williams and Amy Vassie with 1 each.

Best: Lauren Norfolk, Enah Desic, Jessica Williams, Shae Gordon, Tiana Limperakis, Taneka Dhadlie, Jessica Hendry

Morningside coach Alan McGrath said MAGS were the better side.

“They outplayed us at our own style of football today, with harder running, more overlap and a stronger level of desire and intensity all game.

“I felt the warning signs were there as we felt flat from even prior to the warm up, and we just couldn’t flick the switch to get back into the game.

“I’m sure this loss will serve as motivation to find another level in the weeks leading to finals.

Best players: Eden Taylor, Mabel Dart and Poppy Priestley were among our best, trying hard all day to lift the team.
