‘Underdogs’ St Laurence’s College are hoping to continue their string of solid performances when they meet competition favourites Palm Beach Currumbin in the senior male grand final.

A second half ‘strangling’ by St Laurence’s College has seen them punch their ticket to the AFLQ Schools Cup senior male grand final where they will take on competition heavyweights Palm Beach Currumbin.

St Laurence’s defeated All Saints Anglican School 8.6.54-5.7.37 in the preliminary final on Friday evening.

It was a cracking way to close out a massive opening day of action at the AFL Queensland Schools Cup state finals at Maroochydore.

All the action is being exclusively live streamed through KommunityTV including all seniors medals matches and play-offs on Sunday.

Co-captain Jack Kalan said he was proud of his side’s effort in their preliminary final.

“Coming into the game we knew All Saints’ midfield was going to construct everything and how they played in the first half is a credit to them because they are a good side,” he said.

“We knew we just had to keep at it, keep on top of them and almost strangle them out of the game which is what prevailed in the second half.”

He said his side’s objective in the AFLQ Schools Cup competition at the beginning of the season was cloudy.

“Going into our AIC competition we started off a bit iffy to be honest but everyone has really grown together,” Kalan said.

“After our win against Nudgee at Metricon in the regional finals we really showed what we had to give and on Friday against All Saints we went to another level.”

Co-captain Lachlan Warwick said his side now had nothing to lose in the grand final.

“Coming in as the underdogs I think we have a shot at proving what we can do,” he said.

“PBC are obviously a good school, they believe they’re the best and can take out this competition pretty easily but we definitely will put up a good fight.

“If we play our best and stick to our strengths I think we can get it done so everyone’s pretty excited.”

Today promises to be an Aussie rules extravaganza, with 50 games, including Primary male and female semifinals, set for decision on four ovals.

Games begin at 8.30am on ovals 2 and 4, while ovals 1 and 3 kick off at 11am - and have a late finish, with the final matches set down for 6.30pm.

Saturday settles down into an intriguing finals pattern. Ovals 2 and 4 will be the scene for all the big Primary games, with the action starting at 8am and climaxing with back-to-back grand finals on oval 2.

Meanwhile, Sunday will see the older players take centre stage. Eight games are set decision on ovals 1 and 3 from 9am, with, again, the two big matches back-to-back at midday and 1.30pm.

Heavyweights Palm Beach Currumbin have again qualified for all four senior divisions, while St Laurence’s have progressed through to the senior and junior male finals.

Varsity look strong in the senior and junior female competition and Helensvale will pose a big threat in the two junior grand final matches.

Following the North Queensland semifinals, it was St Augustine’s College who progressed in the senior and junior male divisions.

PBC will look to defend their 2022 titles in the senior male and both junior divisions, while Varsity knocked off PBC for the senior female title last year.

In the Primary divisions, it will be Emmanuel College (boys) and Banksia Beach State School (girls) who are aiming for back-to-back trophies.
