Job done for Palm Beach Currumbin.
The Gold Coast sporting behemoth has won all four secondary titles at the AFLQ Schools Cup finals at Maroochydore.
The red and whites took down St Laurence’s in the boys and Varsity College in the girls to go one better than their efforts in 2022.
It started with the junior girls edging out Varsity before the junior boys made it back-to-back premierships with a come-from-behind victory over St Laurence’s.
The powerful senior boys side made it three from three with an impressive win before the senior girls turned in perhaps the best performance of all to score a convincing success.
PBC head of sports excellence Neil Mackay was delighted with the performances.
“The first step is to make the grand finals, so we had to get those wins on Friday, and we were all super excited to get through,” he said
“Then the first two games were really close, real heart stoppers, which were followed by a tough hit out from the senior boys and then the senior girls were sensational and arguably the team of the day.
“We’re really stoked that our program has had some success for all of that hard work, because at the end of the day, it’s hard to win one, let alone four.”

MATCH REPORTS
Senior Female Grand Final
Palm Beach Currumbin 6.8 (44) d Varsity 1.2 (8)
Palm Beach Currumbin’s senior female team rounded out the carnival with a successful revenge mission, which helped etch the school’s name into AFLQ Schools Cup history.
With PBC attacking with the wind in the opening term, they were always going to be tough to stop and an intercept mark in front of the goal square allowed from Mia Salisbury quickly got them on their way.
When 2023 U16 All Australian representative Alannah Welsh added to the lead, it looked ominous for Varsity.
Kayla Giles made it three in a row for PBC soon after and the one-way traffic continued in the second term as Amariah Dumas snapped one to give PBC a 28-point advantage.
Welsh then doubled her scoring efforts for the afternoon, taking PBC’s lead to 35 points before Varsity’s Havana Harris kicked her side’s first points of the match.
Gold Coast Suns U18 academy player Aleira Usher pushed PBC’s lead out to 38 points before the siren rang.
Senior Male Grand Final
St Laurence’s 3.5 (23) lost to Palm Beach Currumbin 10.7 (67)
Palm Beach Currumbin proved too big and too strong for their SEQ opposition, claiming back-to-back senior male state titles.
Some good early ball movement from Lachlan Ferguson landed in the hands of Brock Johnston-Smith, who was able to grab a scrappy opening goal, before St Laurence’s hit back through Charlie Norris, who quickly let his opposition know all about it.
PBC’s Jack Jovanovich retained the lead for his side after outmuscling his opponent in the goal square, but that was the only real scoring opportunity the men in red had in the second term.
Grand final tension continued to escalate as PBC’s Will Graham used the windy conditions perfectly to kick a fantastic goal and extend his side’s lead to 17 points.
PBC’s third goal of the term came from a cracking outside of the boot attempt from Bailey Rawson as they went into the halftime break in total control and leading by 26 points.
Key forward Jovanovich extended his side’s lead after a strong 45m kick against the wind and PBC continued to apply the pressure thanks to a nice run-away goal from Graham.
A free kick awarded to Nicholas Estella was enough for St Laurence’s to grab their second major of the match but the boys in black and yellow still trailed by a hefty 30 points with less than 20 minutes of play remaining.
Ethan Willet found the scoresheet for PBC just before the third quarter siren and tensions continued to boil over as St Laurence got their third goal.
Graham proved tough to contain again as he put another one between the posts before Jett Rowe finished the match off in style.
Junior Male Grand Final
Palm Beach Currumbin 7.7 (49) d St Laurence’s 4.8 (32)
A cracking fourth quarter turnaround was enough for Palm Beach Currumbin’s junior male side to come away with a 17-point victory and back-to-back AFLQ Schools Cup state titles.
Both sides started the match with a point to prove and it was St Laurence’s who went bang, bang, bang with majors from Harry Thomson, Ethan Duke and Bill Wiltshire.
A goal right on the quarter-time siren from PBC’s Taj Murray reduced the deficit to 14 - and he grabbed his second of the match in the second term.
St Laurence’s pushed further ahead before halftime as the teams went into the break with the scores at 4.3 (27) to 2.2 (14).
The boys in yellow continued to control the game but were unable to capitalise on key scoring opportunities, kicking five straight behinds in the third quarter.
A golden opportunity went begging from PBC, but they quickly redeemed themselves after a well worked team goal was finished off by Kodi Wallace.
Just 10 points separated the teams as they ran out for the final quarter and it was PBC who struck first with two quick goals that saw them take the lead for the first time.
Some tough defensive plays from PBC’s captain Jackson Jarvis ensured his team remained in control of the footy before Ned Lawton found back-to-back goals and watched his side run away with a stunning win.
Junior Female Grand Final
Palm Beach Currumbin 4.6 (30) d Varsity 3.2 (20)
Palm Beach Currumbin began a potentially big day with their junior female side snagging a tight victory.
PBC, the defending champions, flew out of the gates early, kicking a quick major before the game became a true end-to-end battle.
Varsity found themselves in better field position for majority of the opening term and a goal right on the siren saw them come away with a one-point lead.
PBC turned the tables in the second quarter and led by one-point at halftime.
And the girls in red extended their lead in the opening two minutes of the third term thanks to a nice major from Tigerlily Nickson.
PBC continue to stretch out their lead but Varsity showed encouraging signs as the game entered the final quarter.
Some more terrific efforts from Imogen Dowker helped Varsity launch the ball forward, resulting in a key goal that bought the girls in grey within one point.
PBC midfielder Natalie Whatman put her side back into a comfortable position by kicking a great open-play goal from in front of the sticks.
As the clock wound down, PBC were able to keep control of the footy down their attacking end.
Best on ground awarded to Natalie Whatman.
PREVIEW
For the third straight year, Palm Beach Currumbin and Varsity College will play off in the senior girls decider at the AFLQ Schools Cup.
The title honours are currently split at 1-1.
And it’s not the only grand final on Sunday bringing together the two rivals, with the junior girls decider a nice entree to the main course.
Varsity captain Nyalli Milne said she was confident of winning, especially after their 99-point success over The Cathedral College on Friday.
“Following our win last year, we’d love to go back-to-back. Everyone’s got pretty high hopes and we all know we can’t leave anything out on the field,” she said.
“I feel like we’ve been working hard in training, getting together, growing as a team and really building to this point.”
Milne was a part of Varsity’s 2022 championship run but said she knew PBC would be out for revenge.
“PBC are always a tough opponent, they’ve just got so many individual weapons, which always makes it a great challenge,” she said.
“We have our strengths, too, which I think is the pace we move the footy and how fast we are to get on the ball.”
What started out as 693 teams and almost 16,000 students across six age divisions, has been whittled down to uncover the best schools in the business.
All of the action is being played at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex from Friday to Sunday.
