PREVIEW
The daughter of an ex-AFL dual premiership player is ready to lead her side into battle for a final time at the AFLQ Schools Cup finals on Saturday.
Sunshine Coast team, Mooloolaba State School, will compete for a podium finish, with Harper McKernan confidently steering the side into the contest.
She is the daughter of 237-game AFL veteran and premiership winner Corey McKernan
The 2023 AFL Schools Cup finals marks Mooloolaba State School’s fourth-consecutive appearance in the primary female finals.
The girls in blue are yet to finish worse than third place after being crowned back-to-back champions in 2020 and 2021 and winning their third-place playoff in 2022.
Harper McKernan, who has been described as ‘fearless’ by Mooloolaba coach Paul Little, will be determined to maintain that winning record in today’s third-place playoff.
“This is our fourth year in a row here, so to make the semifinals, and be a top four team in Queensland, is really exciting,” he said.
“Some of these girls have fallen short in the semifinals for two years running now, but we couldn’t be more proud of them, because as a group they’ve come such a long way.”
Little said the team was made up of a mix of grade six and five students, and also one from grade four.
“There’s about six players in our team that actually play club Aussie rules, then there’s some girls who are swimmers and triathletes and others who have never played a sport,” he said.
“To give some girls an opportunity to play a different sport is exciting. We’re only quite a small school in comparison to the others, so we couldn’t be happier as a collective.”
From across Queensland, 693 teams and almost 16,000 students across six age divisions have been whittled down to uncover the best schools in the business.
All of the action is being played at the Maroochydore Multisport Complex from Friday to Sunday, with every match exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV.
