THE MATCHES
Could you have had two better matches to start day 3? I doubt it, as the Mt Gravatt Vultures clashed with Sandgate (Div 2 boys) and Morningside took on Wilston Grange (Div 1) in two rip-roaring grand finals.
Mt Gravatt won 10-2-62 to 5-5-35 over Sandgate, but try telling the Vultures’ players and supporters they had a comfortable grand final win.
The young Hawks trailed 5-1-31 to 0-1-1 before they kicked their first major - and then surged to an inspiring comeback.
Indeed deep into the final term the Vultures held a 6-2-38 to 5-4-34 as Sandgate surged against their becalmed rivals.
But it was Mt Gravatt who prevailed, kicking one and then wrapping the game up with a soccered ball that dribbled, rather than rolled, across the line.
It was not a pretty goal, but it was joyfully received by the army of Vultures fans as the match drifted marginally beyond Sandgate’s grasp.
That goal was followed by another and the premiership cup was safely on its way to Klump Rd, Upper Mt Gravatt.
Earlier, the Mt Gravatt Vultures under 12 Div 2 boys settled the grand final nerves with an early goal - and then another and then a third major to establish a first quarter lead.
The Vultures were greeted with wild applause from onlookers and a call of “on ya Vultures’’ as the players made their way to the coach for a first quarter chat.
The Sandgate Hawks were rallied together by their coach, and ended the term break with a “one, two, three’’ chant before sprinting off into their positions.
But it was the Vultures who maintained a territorial advantage and two more goals - including a screamer - led to a 5-1-31 to 0-1-1 lead.
But Sandgate received a huge second term boost with its first major and seemed to regain parity with their rivals.
On field No.1, old foes Wilston Grange and Morningside went to work in the under 12 Div 1 clash. with the mighty Morningside Panthers inching ahead to win 7-9-51 to 4-5-29 in another magnificent youth grand final.
The Gorillas got on the board first - initially with a behind and then with a soaring major as both team’s settled into the frantic pace of the Div 1 boys encounter.
Morningside’s idling engines started to warm and by halftime we had another thriller - with the Panthers ahead 2-4-16 to 2-3-15.
What a game it was, with Wilston Grange retaking the lead into the third term in a high class affair.
But Morningside then started to capitalise on its chances, breaking clear 6-7-43 to 4-4-28 into the fourth quarter.
In the under 12 Div 2 boys decider between Alexandra Hills and the Leopards, Alex Hills got out of the blocks with the first four scoring shots.
Alex Hills generated more scoring shots but Calamvale’s defenders dug deep and Alexandra Hills never far enough ahead to feel safe. The final score came to rest at 5--15-51 to 2-3-15.
Earlier, Alex Hills led 2-9-21 to 1-2-8 but Calamvale kept contesting hard at the ball and worked hard all game.
Eventually goals came for Calamvale whose persistence was rewarded in the third term, but Alex Hills responded with another three goals and heading for home at the start of the fourth quarter, Alexandra Hills led 5-12-42 to 2-3-15.
In the under 14 Div 4 clash, the Sandgate Hawks got cracking to kick nine of the first 13 scoring shots of the match against Aspley.
It was another dogged grand final with the desperation of both team’s evident, with Sandgate leading 2-5-17 to 0-4-4 at the long break.
Aspley struck back with an early third quarter goal, and a thrilling finish was in the offering.
The Hawks hit back almost straight away to establish a two goal margin, but it was anyone’s game as Aspley continued to stay within striking distance.
