THE MATCHES
Marymount College junior males will play Palm Beach Currumbin SHS in a semi-final Gold Coast derby after Marymount progressed with a 10-3-63 to 4-7-31 quarterfinal win over Pacific Pines today.
Marymount leapt out of the blocks to kick the first three goals of the match against Pacific Pines SHS before Pacific Pines finished with a first term major.
Marymount were the better side and were rewarded on the scoreboard with accurate shots around goal, but Pacific Pines competed hard throughout despite Marymount establishing a 9-3-57 to 2-3-14 lead into the final quarter.

Pacific Pines SHS had spirits raised with the first goal of the last quarter and later in the term a banana kick by Levi Prior, but Marymount were too big and too strong.
“It was really good today to see we have 22 contributors and stuck to our processes and tried to bring each other in by hand and foot,’’ said Marymount junior males coach Jack Mitchell.
Midfield-forward Jack Hudson played strongly, while Taj Lockett in the forward line gave has team a target
In the senior female competition on field 2, Southport SHS and Varsity College were level pegging after the first quarter, before Varsity worked its way clear by a couple of goals at the long break.
They then went on with the job in the third and fourth terms, winning 8-8-56 to 1-2-8.
“As a team the senior girls really stepped up for the finals,’’ said Varsity senior girls coach Ben Nicolls.
“They kicked some goals early which was important and it set the tone for the match. We also had a couple of key players stand up, and hopefully we will be able to it again next match.’’
Varsity were best served by Matisse Bettridge, Amali Eyers, Storm Holbut-Hutton and Ella Stuart.
In the junior females clash between Varsity College and Mountain Creek SHS, Varsity established a 4-3-27 to 1-0-6 advantage early on.
Varsity College then went on with the job to win 9-13-67 to 1-0-6.
In the match of the morning, Miami SHS junior males held on to beat a fast finishing Albany Creek SHS 5-6-36 to 5-3-33.
Ethan Rose’s second goal of the match for Albany Creek minutes from full time reduced the margin to less than a kick after Miami had led from start to finish.
Miami had established a handy 3-3-21 to 1-2-8 halftime lead after a tight, competitive quarterfinal, then importantly kicked the first major of the vital third quarter to stretch the lead to 19 points.
But Albany Creek SHS refused to throw in the towel and almost stole it at the end.
Miami SHS coach AJ Dawson said the quarterfinals had been the deepest a junior boys team had gone into the Schools Cup, and his side was excited to now play semi-finals.
Dawson said Finley Gray in the midfield, forward Judd Pollard and fellow midfielder Liam Mallen shared BoG honours.
He said a lot of the boys carried momentum for their grand final appearances in club AFL SEQ youth grand final into the game.
“To back up I thought they had a really good crack,’’ Dawson said.
“We will be two stages further (semi-finals) than any stage we have been before and I think the boys are just really enjoying playing footy together because they are rivals at club.
“So if we continue to move the ball well, we will give it a crack.’’
Marymount College had another win - this time in junior girls as Miller Brosnan-Ball (ruck), Bronte Parker (midfield), Summer Symmons (midfield) and Alexis Smyth and Chanel Davis lead the way over a big-hearted Sunshine Beach SHS.
Marymount junior girls coach Jess Berryman said it was a wonderful competition and a great chance for girls at the school to play team sport.
In junior female action, Park Ridge SHS, a traditional footy stronghold, had a sound win over Kedron SHS who had done very well to reach the quarterfinal stage.
BoG for Park Ridge were Ila Streeter. DeKota Baron and Kiara-Lee Rowe.
“I have just been really impressed with the girls effort and attitude,’’ said Zac McLean, Park Ridge SHS coach.
In junior boys, Padua College started well by generating the first five scoring shots of its clash with Siena Catholic College, including two majors.
Meanwhile, this season a record number of well over 600 teams competed state wide in the competition.
Marymount College will have two team’s in today’s quarterfinals and already has the senior males safely qualified for the semi-final.
Marymount senior girls coach Cameron Francis said the competition was “going from strength to strength each year’’ and he was delighted Marymount was a part of its growth.
“The numbers in terms of participation just keep going and going,’’ Francis said.
“We now have as many girls wanting to play AFL as boys, which is just fantastic.’’
The result of the final four matches were:
Junior Male – Padua College 10.23(83) def. Sienna Catholic College 1.0(6)
Senior Female - Cavendish Rd 11.3 (69) Def. Helensvale 1.2 (8)
Senior Male - St Laurence’s College 8.10(58) def. St Andrews 2.5 (17)

Kedron senior women’s coach Ross Clayfield is taking great delight in the growth of the Schools Cup after his school were original participants.
“It is a terrific competition. Being a part of Q-Cup since day one, we have seen it grow every year and the number of schools involved is fantastic and it is something the girls value,’’ said Clayfield, who has his senior girls through to the semi-finals.
