Host club Yeronga Devils AFC were celebrating the first premiership of the AFL SEQ junior club grand finals after a rousing victory by the under 14 Division 4 boys. The side won 10-4-64 to 2-4-16.
Playing like they knew every blade of grass on No.2 oval - which is probably the case given they train at the ground - Yeronga pushed clear of Wynnum with a decisive second quarter performance.
After the cut-and-thrust of a tight opening quarter - Yeronga led just 2-2-14 to 1-2-8 - the young Devils pounced.
In slippery conditions they found their radar to boot three goals, the last of which was a scrambling effort which raised the team to a 5-2-32 to 1-2-8 advantage.
While there was still a long way to go in the match, given the conditions - and playing under lights - it was always going to be a tall order for a gallant Wynnum to overhaul their rivals.
A resolute Wynnum responded with a dogged defensive effort to start the third term, but Yeronga still wriggled free to kick a further three goals and by quarter time the match was won with Yeronga leading 8-3-51 to 2-2-14.
Full credit must be given to Wynnum for kicking the last goal of the term despite the match slipping away from them.
And there was plenty of bright spots for Wynnum, including Luke Costa being awarded best and fairest player across the competition.
On field No.1, the Sandgate Hawks tasted sweet premiership success.
The Hawks soared to the first goal of its grand final over North Lakes in the under 12 Div boys decider.
The ground was in magnificent condition, but it was damp after rain had swept across the ground during the early stages, and as a result both teams found it difficult to build attacking cohesion.
North Lakes actually kicked two behinds in the first half, cutting Sandgate’s lead to 6-2.
But Sandgate found their mark in the third and fourth quarters, with concerted pressure leading to a third term major, and then a fantastic team build-up presenting the side with its fourth quarter goal.
That goal lifted the Hawks to 3-0-18 to 1-2-8 and in a low scoring match, one sensed it might be enough. The final score was 3-0-18 to 1-3-9 to Sandgate.
