News Corp’s commitment to AFLQ SEQ’s youth grand final day follows our live streaming of AFLQ StreetSmart Schools Cup finals’ action - which will include Tuesday’s quarterfinal matches - and next month’s semi finals and grand finals.
How appropriate it was that the last game of the day, between Morningside and Victoria Point was a two point thriller - won by Vicky Point - because day 2 was littered with classic, close grand final action.
MATCHES
The opening match of the day was an absolute grand final classic won 4-0-24 to 3-5-23 by Aspley under 13 Div 2 girls over Everton Blue.
Some Aspley players slummed to the ground in relief, before leaping up and running to embrace each other.
But Everton Blue players also gathered quickly together in midfield, hugging each other after their bold bid for victory failed by the narrowest of margins.
Everton had worked their way back to lead 2-5-17 to 2-0-12 at the third quarter break.
Aspley then hit the front with a goal midway through the final term to lead by just one point.
Earlier, the under 13 Aspley Div 2 girls jumped the gun to kick a goal and behind before Everton Blue settled and worked their way back into the game.
An Everton goal lit up the match, reducing Aspley’s margin to just one point by the first quarter break.
Everton actually had more scoring chances than Aspley across the first half, but accurate kicking saw the Hornets reach a lead of 2-0-12 to 1-3-9 by the ling break.
The competition best and fairest player was Aspley’s Taylor McLeod, while Aspley's Arahi Walker was named BoG.
On field No. 1 the under 15 Mt Gravatt Vultures’ girls started like a freight train to generate five scoring chances - one of which was a major score.
Vultures led 2-3-15 over Jimboomba Redbacks during a first quarter surge, then kicked another behind and another goal to establish a 3-4-22 to 0-0-0 advantage after winning possession across the centreline and in the midfield.
Mt Gravatt went on to win 7-16-59 to 1-2-9.
Redbacks were full of beans on grand final day and did their community proud with their effort on the big stage.
They roared through a banner made by Redbacks’ community prior to the match after after slipping behind, dug in doggedly during the third and fourth terms.
In the under 13 Div 3 girls, North Lakes-Redcliffe and Morningside girls’ went toe-to-toe in a ripping encounter, with North Lakes-Redcliffe marginally rising above their rivals 5-6-36 to 4-4-28.
What a great game it was with North Lakes-Redcliffe initially generating more scoring opportunities to importantly put a little bit of distance between their rivals - 4-5-29 to 2-0-12.
And they needed every bit of their lead as the Panthers closed in, trailing by just 4-5-29 to 3-1-19 and then 4-6-30 to 3-3-21 as the clock clicked down.
There was more good news for North Lakes-Redcliffe when Mia Doyle was named under 13 Div 3 player of the competition.
And Morningside also had its share of joy, with Veronica Picerno named BoG despite her team’s narrow loss.
On field No.1, Broadbeach prevailed in a physical under 17 Div 1 encounter against Wests Juniors, with players from both teams leaving nothing in the dressing rooms.
Broadbeach won 4-3-27 to 3-7-25 in a tight grand final tussle that featured fierce defence and commitment to the ball.
Wests Juniors kicked the opening goal, but there was not a struck match between them and rivals Broadbeach in the under 17 Div 12 encounter.
Wests led early, Broadbeach pegged them back, Wests surged again and so it went on, back and forth throughout a tremendous grand final.
Broadbeach held a narrow three point advantage throughout the last term and try as they did, Wests could not breach the gap.
Celebrations continued for Broadbeach when Tara Harrington was named BoG and her team mate Jasymn Smith the best and fairest across the competition.
Wests Juniors had a nice moment when their Div 1 under 15 player Eva Sartor was named best and fairest across her age group.
In the Div 2 under 13 girls premiership clash on field 1, Sherwood and Wests slugged it out in a local derby - won by the Sherwood Magpies over their near rivals.
Gosh it was close.
Indeed at halftime they drew breath with Sherwood just ahead - 1-2-8 to 0-1-1 - and the scoreline only progressed to 1-2-8 to 0-2-2 by fulltime.
Best on Ground was Sherwood’s Annabel Peacock.
In the under 15 Div 2 girls clash between Moreton Bay and Aspley, extra time was needed to split the teams.
Aspley kicked two goals in the extra six minutes of playing, running out winners 4-2-26 to 2-2-14.
What drama there was, with Aspley somehow rising from a dead heat finish to claim the premiership.
Supporters and players roared and cheered some more as they made their way to the presentation area.
The grand final was played in a similar vein to the Sherwood-Wests Juniors clash, with either side able to be pulled apart across the match.
It was 1-1-7 to 1-1-7 at halftime, and that grew to a single behind difference deep into the third quarter.
The score of 1-1 to 1-1 became 2-2-14 to 2-2-14 at full time, leading to a dramatic extra time surge which saw Aspley finish the stronger.
But there was a nice moment for the Moreton Bay side, with Lataya De Pauw named best and fairest across her competition.
In the under 14 Div 2 under 14 boys grand final, Jindalee jumped out of the blocks to establish a 3-2-20 to 1-2-8 advantage.
But back Wests came - and hard, reducing Jindalee’s margin to 4-3-27 to 3-3-21 at the long break.
Jindalee kicked the first goal of the third term, and then a couple of behinds, but it was anyone’s match when Wests kicked the next major to reduce Jindalee’s advantage to just seven points.
On field 1, the Everton Wolves and Calamvale Leopards fronted each other in the under 15 Div 3 girls encounter - yet another tense, nailing biting grand final.
Meanwhile, Mt Gravatt’s Jessica La Vigne was named best and fairest across her competition.
