And it is little wonder Mellars, 18, is a multi-talented sportsman.

After all his father Vince played NRL for the Warriors, Roosters, Sharks while his basketball playing mum Charmian was a 2008 Beijing Olympic New Zealand representative and a Commonwealth Games silver medallist.

“I look up to them for everything they have done and they guide me the best way they can, so the best thing I can do is listen to them and follow in their footsteps and hopefully create my own path,’’ Mellars said.

Mellars said while it was great to have dad’s league genes, there was also a cross over of skills from basketball he uses as a winger.

“There are a lot of skills in basketball that you don’t learn in rugby league and those skills sometimes give me an advantage in a game,’’ Mellars said.

Mellars, who arrived at Marsden SHS last year, said he was loving his time at the school and excited to be playing in the Langer Trophy. He missed round 1 due to injury.

Mellars said playing two successive season with Wynnum Manly in the Meninga Cup had also helped with his confidence and broaden his knowledge base.
