A man who lives on a street in Brisbane’s south where an alleged murder and a separate stabbing happened in one week says he no longer fears safe in his suburb.
Connor Ward has lived in Acacia Ridge for two and a half years and says he’s noticed a rise in crime in the suburb.
“I don’t feel that safe in my own neighbourhood,” he said as he visited the scene of a stabbing on May 17.
Five days earlier, Bosco Minyurano was allegedly murdered by 30-year-old Emmanuel Saki on the same street.
Mr Ward said he was concerned about a rise in crime, but admitted it was not a problem exclusive to his suburb.
“A few days ago there was a fatal stabbing the other end of the street, last night there was an altercation at the Acacia Ridge Hotel,” he said.
“I believe there was a shooting in Park Ridge last night, somebody was shot in the neck, a robbery gone wrong.
“There has been two fires at the Acacia Ridge shopping centre, there’s footage online of people with a grinder cutting the door.
“If you go up to the shops half of them are shut because of fires in the tobacconist wars, this is just up the road. I don’t know what the solution is.”
A 17-year-old man was charged with attempted murder for the alleged May 17 stabbing on Gregory St. The case was mentioned in Brisbane Children’s Court on May 18.
He remains remanded in custody and will next face Richlands Magistrates Court on June 27.
In the wake of the stabbing, police said they were treating the incident as a “stand-alone altercation”.
“My message to the people of Acacia Ridge and broader to Brisbane, is that there is no further threat to the community,” Inspector Karl Hahne said.
Moorooka Councillor Steve Griffiths said residents had a right to feel safe in the community.
“Murder has never happened before in that park but there has been stabbings before and people have been chased with knives,” he said.
“Everyone has a right to feel safe, my understanding is the police were onto both of those incidents very quickly. It’s a major park that needs lighting.”
