The most dangerous suburbs in Brisbane’s south have been revealed with new police data showing which areas criminals are targeting.

Statistics from Queensland Police show the south’s worst suburbs for crime

The area included stretches from Brisbane’s inner-south, such as South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point, to as far south as Sunnybank and eastern suburbs like the city’s bayside in Wynnum and Manly.

The South Brisbane District had a total of 11,576 alleged offences over the past three months, a slight increase from before Summer.

East Crime Group Detective Inspector Steve Hollands said an increase in offending during the warmer months was common.

Three suburbs from Brisbane’s inner-south feature in the top five for crime with South Brisbane leading the way with 696 alleged offences, Woolloongabba in third with 353 alleged offences and West End with the fourth highest number at 321 alleged offences.

Further south, Upper Mt Gravatt has the second highest amount of alleged offences with 428 and Sunnybank with the fifth highest at 307 alleged offences.

Acacia Ridge and Sunnybank Hills are also in the top 10 with Moorooka, Kangaroo Point and Annerley also among the highest.

Wynnum is the highest on Brisbane’s bayside with 186 offences (11th) while Coorparoo was the top in Brisbane’s southeast with 185 (12th).

According to Queensland Police statistics, most alleged offences occurred on the weekends with Fridays between 2pm and 10pm recording the most crimes.

Theft was the crime with the most alleged offences in the area over the past three months with 4251 alleged offences followed by unlawful entry with 1618 alleged offences and other property damage with 834 alleged offences.

Theft and unlawful entry are the two most common crimes across Brisbane’s south.

Det Insp Hollands said one of the biggest contributing factors to the numbers was property crimes, which could be limited by residents themselves.

“Residents are encouraged to take every precaution possible against these types of crimes, especially the storing of valuables and property, including car keys,” he said.

“Car keys being stored in places that are easy to get to for offenders is one of the most common things we see and a lot of crimes that comes from this are preventable so we just urge residents to be cautious with these types of things.”

Other crimes with high numbers across the district include drug offences (939), assault (740 offences), unlawful use of a motor vehicle (641 alleged offences) and fraud (445 alleged offences).

Det Insp Hollands said police would continue to be out in force to make the area as safe as possible for residents and visitors.

He also said the South Brisbane District recently established a District Tasking and Coordination Centre (DTACC), which uses current intelligence to ensure police resources are being directed into high volume crime areas with the purpose of preventing and disrupting offending, including road safety, public safety and criminal activity.

The district has had four incidents of murder or attempted murder, including the alleged stabbing of two men in Dutton Park in November and the alleged hit and run of Queensland Police senior constable Luke Zannier in Salisbury in December.
