New police data has exposed the ugly side of Ipswich suburbs, with a litanly of offences logged already this year.
The information has revealed Ipswich’s worst suburbs for crime, with one suburb taking out the notorious title as the most risky to live in.
Thefts, assaults, and other crimes continue to permeate the streets of Redbank Plains at night, with police data revealing it is by far the most dangerous suburb to live in at Ipswich.
Over the past three months, the local government area of Ipswich has recorded a total of 4405 offences.
More than 10 per cent of those offences — 473 — occurred in Redbank Plains; an average of about five per day.
According to recent police data, the crimes commonly took place at midnight and on the weekends. The most happened on Fridays, then Sundays, then Saturdays and Wednesdays.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said unlawful entry of a motor vehicle was the “major offence” being reported in the Redbank Plains area.
“This could be attributed to a variety of factors, including: residents leaving their vehicles parked in the street, leaving valuable items or money in view inside their vehicle and not locking their vehicle when they attend shopping centres,” she said.
“Leaving vehicles unlocked may also enable the vehicle to be stolen.”
She advised members of the community lock and secure their vehicles regardless of the time of day or location and remove all items of value.
Ipswich central and Goodna were the second and third most crime-affected suburbs over the last quarter with 340 and 335 offences respectively.
In the suburb of Ipswich, good order offences — meaning, generally, offences that manage conduct in public places, such as public nuisance offences — were the most prevalent, followed by thefts then assaults.
In Goodna, theft was rife with more than 26 per cent of all offences within the suburb attributable to the crime.
Coming in at fourth and fifth for Ipswich’s most dangerous suburbs were North Ipswich and Brassall.
North Ipswich, with 271 offences in the past three months, and Brassall, with 241 offences in the same time, saw high rates of theft in comparison to other offences.
Likewise, Booval and Redbank saw more theft than any other offending.
Booval was also one of the only suburbs in the Ipswich region, along with Ipswich central, to record a prostitution offence since November last year.
Bellbird Park, Leichhardt, and Springfield Lakes rounded out the worst Ipswich suburbs for crime this year, with 151, 144, and 141 incidents taking place respectively.
Generally, across the Ipswich district, assault, drug, prostitution, and breach of domestic violence protection order offences decreased in frequency in January from December.
Homicide, sexual offences, robberies, unlawful entries, arson, and fraud were, however, more common.
The one incident of murder alleged to have occurred in the past three months, according to the police data, was on January 23 at Hannant St, Collingwood Park.
The Queensland Times has broken down the data to reveal the 10 most crime-affected suburbs in recent times.
SUBURBS WITH HIGHEST CRIME RATE IN PAST THREE MONTHS
10. SPRINGFIELD LAKES — 141 offences
Crime in Springfield Lakes over the past three months has largely occurred on Saturdays and Tuesdays, about midnight.
The suburb saw a small spike in criminal activity in January, with theft the biggest threat to residents.

9. LEICHHARDT — 144 offences
Between 2pm and 3pm on Sunday February 6, it is alleged a Leichhardt man, 20, attended a Bass St address in a vehicle and threw a wrench at a back window, causing it to smash.
The man is scheduled to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on March 16, charged with threatening violence.
The alleged incident is one of 144 offences to have occurred in the suburb since November 10 last year.

8. BELLBIRD PARK — 151 offences
A petrol station on Redbank Plains Road at Bellbird Park was allegedly robbed by a man armed with a rock and stick on December 23 last year.
“The man then proceeded to smash the station’s glass sliding door before threatening staff and demanding cash,” a police spokesman said at the time.
There were 10 instances of unlawful entry, one of robbery, and 57 of theft excluding unlawful entry in the three months to Wednesday February 10.

7. REDBANK — 162 offences
Police have opened an investigation into a serious crash that occurred on January 19 and left a young Ipswich man with serious head injuries.
The Queensland Times reported the 25-year-old was crossing the road on his skateboard near Redbank Plaza when he was struck by a car.
A total of 17 traffic and related offences have occurred over the past three months.

In November last year, a man was sentenced for attempting to steal a car from Booval Fair Shopping Centre while the driver was reversing out of the carpark.
Since his conviction, there have been more than 195 crimes committed within the suburb of Booval comprising, largely, theft offences.

The risk of offending is about the same each day of the week, though slightly higher on Saturdays and Tuesdays, and crime is widespread throughout the suburb.

New police data has revealed offences at North Ipswich occur at odd times of the day, mostly between 1pm and 5pm.
Thursday is by far the most common day of the week for criminal activity to take place within the suburb; then Friday.
The crime ‘other theft excluding entry’, meaning theft without force or deceit, is prevalent within communities above all other offending.

According to new police data, crime at Goodna over the past three months has mostly occurred about midnight and 6pm on Fridays, Mondays, and Thursdays, and Sundays.
There was a significant spike in criminal activity within the suburb in December, but the number of offences has been slowly declining since.

On January 30, between 5.05am and 5.55am, police will allege an unknown offender, or offenders, attended an address on Warwick Road, Ipswich and gained entry to an administration building.
It is understood whoever gained entry stole property including laptops and stationery.
The theft is one of dozens to have occurred in the suburb over the past few months.

Redbank Plains was Ipswich’s worst suburb for crime in 2021, so it will perhaps come as no surprise it has ranked once again.
The suburb is the largest within the Ipswich District geographically and its high number of residents certainly contribute to its high number of offences.
Theft was the most common offence to occur within the suburb over the past three months, followed by assaults, property damage, and traffic offences.
