In “a cracker” open volleyball match fortunes would vacillate as the girls fought for every point.

Somerville House director of sport Andrew McCabe said they nearly had the match in hand early on only for MBC to show its tenacity with a fightback that made for must-see play at Somerville House.

However, the hosts would prevail with a hard-earned 3-2 victory.

Elsewhere MBC, killers all season long, extended its winning streaks.

The girls from Manly West won all their netball fixtures bar one and thrilled with four out of four victories in hockey, held at the University of Queensland.

The wins, however, did not come easy with Somerville House director of sport Andrew McCabe reporting matches were tight across volleyball and netball – a Somerville House loss of 21-24 in the open netball reflective of the razor close competition.

It comes as a season of sport ends in a year of unprecedented rigour with McCabe saying they were “pretty happy” overall and grateful to have had the chance to play at all.

St Hilda’s School put on a powerhouse performance to tie the bow on its season suffering only a few losses across all sports bar volleyball against St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School and Ipswich Girls Grammar.

The Gold Coast girls were in particularly good form on the tennis court with wins across all ages.

“The opens and senior teams had good matches today with Dayna Whitelely-Hall from the opens team playing particularly strong,” St Hilda’s acting head of sport Mel Lilley said.

“The junior tennis teams were full of energy and excited to play in their last match of the season. Their confidence was high from wins in previous weeks and they were too strong for the Ipswich team.

“It was a fantastic result with St Hilda’s winning all three junior team matches.

“Incredible performances by Summer Osborne and Gabriella Durinic both winning their singles and doubles matches without dropping a single game.

“Needless to say the teams left the courts very happy and looking forward already to next season.”

The success was mirrored in hockey with St Hilda’s senior side running away with a 6-2 victory against St Aidan’s AGS and solidifying a “stellar” undefeated season.

“With girls from grade 8 all the way through to grade 12, the team came together, worked cohesively as units and put into the games all they had been working hard on in trainings,” Lilley said.

It was a closer affair in netball, however, with a single draw in the mix.

St Hilda’s 10B side won 26 – 14 against IGGS with 7B running flush against IGGS 11 – 11.

“Both Lulu Taylor and Hannah Green were standouts in the 10B team” Lilley said.

“Their defensive effort was incredible and their attacking game was also strong.

“In 7B Madison Holsheimer was amazing in defence and Madeleine Jackson was very accurate in goals.

“All players across all teams put in a valiant effort for the seniors final game of school sport. “The opens had a tough game and didn’t pull off the victory however they had many standout players.

“Isabella Briggs was as dependable as always in both attack and defence through the centre court.

“And Lauren Scott’s defensive footwork and quick hands allowed her to pull in a few solid intercepts.

“Jess Pearce put in a mammoth effort in the third quarter at wing defence and resulted in the defensive line forcing turn overs.”

And in the volleyball St Hilda’s put a stamp on things with a 2-1 victory against IGGS with its 8A side and a 3-nill win for the 7A side

“Serena Lamattina’s court coverage and Sydney Prendergast-Burtenshaw’s serving led the 7A team to victory,” Lilley said.

“The 7A team’s communication and movement was largely improved from previous weeks and their small efforts was what got them over the line.

“All girls had a wonderful first season of volleyball and are looking forward to playing again next year.

“In the 8A team, Chryssa Dakin had the perfect touch finishing off many great points and getting her team over the line in a close win.

“And while the open team didn’t get a win, Emma Raby again starred as a solid hitter and consistent server.”
