QGSSSA sport: Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association action

There were dominant performances by Brisbane State High School, Brisbane Girls Grammar School and St Peters Lutheran College yesterday, with close matches fought elsewhere to spectators’ delight.

In a season first the sight of spectators was the starring attraction at a windblown round of the Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) at Clayfield College yesterday.

Despite furious gusts testing the mettle of netballers throughout proceedings Clayfield College director of sport John Woods reported a round of mostly close competition against Somerville House and the first to feature spectators.

Brisbane State High School (BSHS) had a series of commanding wins but also some close calls against Ipswich Girls Grammar School (IGGS) at various facilities in the Brisbane region.

QGSSSA director of sport and girls’ activities Anita Woodward reported 11 out of 13 wins went to BSHS in the netball and the school was victorious in all seven of its tennis matches against IGGS.

However, things tightened markedly in the volleyball where the 9 A and 10 A sides had “quite close and exciting” matches.

BSHS Year 9 A won 2 sets to 1 in a close shave victory that saw scores at 27-25 in each of the winning sets.

And BSHS Year 10 A won 2 sets to 1 after losing its first set 24-26.

A volleyball serving star came to the fore yesterday as St Hilda’s School locked horns with St Margaret’s at Southport.

St Hilda’s Maki Undi served a blistering nine straight winners in the 7A contest having only learnt the overhand technique some two weeks ago and in so doing secured a three-set victory.

St Hida’s acting head of sport Mel Lilley said enthusiasm and school spirit was really evident on the day and commended both schools for “really good sportsmanship”.

Elsewhere in volleyball the home side’s open side secured a 3-1 victory in a tight four-set contest.

And games remained close for the 8A and 9A volleyball sides which both won its matches 2 sets to 1 against St Margaret’s.

Lilley said no hockey matches were played on the day.

It was a near clean sweep for Brisbane Girls Grammar School (BGGS) against St Aidan’s College yesterday who were improving with each week.

BGGS won all hockey fixtures against St Aidan’s, except for the open game, with Saints surging to a 3-2 victory in a high-quality, competitive affair.

And in a surging performance BGGS won all volleyball fixtures, except for a loss by its 7B team.

The open game, which we won 3-2 was also a very close, competitive match, with all athletes performing well.

Again in tennis BGGS defeated St Aidan’s in all but one match.

St Aidan’s director of sport Andy McGregor-Lowndes said it was great to see the girls improve each week as was evidenced by wins from both their open hockey and tennis sides “against a much larger school”.

St Aidan’s surged to a victory in open tennis against BGGS.
