The Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association sporting season opened with a bang despite the big wet, with teams ploughing through to kick-start competition.

The Queensland Girls’ Secondary Schools Sports Association sporting season opened with a bang in the big wet, with some teams ploughing through torrid conditions to kick-start competition in spirited style.

There was no better match on day one of competition than the open netball thriller won by St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School over Somerville House in a last second thriller.

And there was a no more spirited performance than the efforts of the Clayfield College and Ipswich Girls’ Grammar Girls who defied wet conditions to play the first official tennis fixture of the season on Friday night.

IGGS won the open tennis 35-28 and the junior A competition 32-19 while Clayfield College claimed the senior B game 31-27.

But win, lose or draw, in the words of Clayfield College director of sport Jon Woods, “sport was the winner’’.

He was also proud of the desire of the tennis players from both Clayfield and IGGS to defy the wet and push on with launching competition.

“I am very proud to say us and IGGS were the ones who played on Friday in tennis. The girls were so happy, they were active and there were smiles.

“It was QG camaraderie to kick start it (sport) all again.’’

Woods said he was also proud of Clayfield College’s 8B netball team which drew with IGGS.

He said after a disheartening 2019 when the side was well beaten, “the girls rallied to give year 8 a go and drew’’.

“I really love this 8B space, coming back from a big thrashing last year to have a really positive experience.

“You could see they were all beaming. They were out there doing it tough in wet conditions and they are loving it.’’

Arguably the match of the day was between St Margaret’s and Somerville House in open netball.

Played indoors at the Nissan Arena, the match went down to the wire before St Margaret’s edged out their rivals 29-28 in the final play of the game.

“It was a really good match,’’ praised Somerville House director of sport Andrew McCabe.

“It was really close, and a really good performance by both sides.’’

He said the Somerville House side was full of junior players on the rise. “We have a lot junior girls in the open team which is good news moving forward for the next couple of years.’’

McCabe reversed the result in a close open volleyball clash against St Margaret’s. “We are lucky to have such a strong young group of girls’’.

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School Head of Sport Helen Lobegeiger praised the magnificent open netball win in the last second, but was also delighted with the open girls claiming the open junior As hockey in the rain.

“The girls toughed it out,’’ she said.

“It was a great goal, they pushed the ball down from halfway and it was a great team goal.’’

St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School claimed the open volleyball clash 3-1 in a round disrupted by rain, earning high praise from School Director of Sport Andy McGregor-Lowndes.

Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School got through plenty of sport despite the rain, with the hockey teams have tremendous results.

BGGS won the opens 7-0, the senior As 8-0 and the junior As 4-1 against St Peters.

However, St Peters Lutheran College bounced back in the volleyball, restricting BGGS to wins in the 7Bs and 8Bs only.

St Peters enjoyed the spoils in the opens (3-0), senior As (2-1), 10As and 10Bs (both 2-1) and both 9As and 9Bs volleyball.

But BGGS did claim the 8Bs 3-0 and the 7Bs 2-1.
