From ice traffickers to LSD dealers, there have been several Sunshine Coast parents who decided to peddle misery in their communities but were busted for their crimes.
Here are some of the Sunshine Coast’s drug dealing parents exposed.
Kylie Maree Herberts
A mum of young children was sentenced for dealing methamphetamine in exchange for a bottle of perfume.
Police raided Kylie Maree Herberts’ Buderim home and car at 5pm on March 21, 2019, finding just under 1g of marijuana, small amounts of methamphetamine, clip seal bags, $850 in cash and a phone.
Herberts, then 42, pleaded guilty to six charges including supplying a Schedule 1 dangerous drug in August 2020.
She was given 12 months’ jail with immediate parole.
Maree Ann Johnson
A Coast drug dealer charged with 16 counts of supplying methamphetamines while on probation avoided jail time after a court heard she had a “traumatic” brain injury which could put her at risk in custody.
Maree Ann Johnson, 39, faced the Maroochydore District Court for sentencing in March after pleading guilty to 16 charges.
The mother-of-two was charged with supplying drugs after police searched her house in 2019, finding digital scales and two mobile phones which were analysed, revealing details of her dealing.
She was given a head sentence of two and a half years with immediate parole.
Reece Liam Eveans
A Brisbane father-of-three involved in trafficking methamphetamine smashed his phone with a hammer when police executed a search warrant, not realising it would leave the incriminating SIM card untouched.
Sandgate man Reece Liam Eveans, 32, formerly of Mountain Creek, where some of his ice trafficking occurred, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court to seven serious drug offences.
They included two counts of trafficking in a dangerous drug, four counts of supplying a dangerous drug, and one of possessing a mobile phone used in connection with a drug offence.
Justice David Boddice sentenced Eveans to four years’ imprisonment, suspended after serving 12 months for an operational period of four years.
Jake James McDonald
Police raided Jake James McDonald’s Woombye home at 5am on December 3, 2018, after intercepting a suspicious coded phone call the then 28-year-old received about a drug deal.
The Sunshine Coast father pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court in February to two counts of unlawfully supplying dangerous drugs and one each of possessing dangerous drugs, possessing a thing used in connection with supplying drugs and possessing things used to produce a dangerous drug.
He was sentenced to one year in jail with immediate release on parole.
Mahdi Green
A prominent Sunshine Coast ex-realtor and junior rugby league football club volunteer trafficked an extraordinary amount of cocaine and cannabis, shelling out up to $25,000 at a time to purchase drugs, a court heard.
Coolum Beach man and father Mahdi Green, 40, a former agent at LJ Hooker Peregian Beach and volunteer at a Sunshine Coast JRLFC, winning volunteer of the year in 2019, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court in July to one count of drug trafficking.
Green was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, eligible for parole after serving 16 months.
Micah Ivory
A Sunshine Coast roofer’s sad decline into trafficking in three different dangerous drugs and injecting up to a gram of ice a day was precipitated by a nasty fall on the job in which he hurt his back, a court has heard.
Nambour father Micah David Ivory, 35, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court to four serious drug offences.
They included two counts of trafficking in the dangerous drugs cannabis, ice and GHB, and two counts of supplying a dangerous drug, cocaine and MDMA.
Justice Jean Dalton sentenced Ivory to four years’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of four years after serving 12 months, and three years’ probation.
Kale-Anthony Zerafa
Tanawha father Kale Anthony Zerafa was one of three Sunshine Coast men sentenced for their roles in a massive ice-trafficking ring, with two of them jailed.
Zerafa, 21, pleaded guilty to trafficking in methamphetamine and possessing mobile phones used to conduct the business of trafficking, and possessing a small amount of methamphetamine.
Brisbane Supreme Court heard Zerafa’s trafficking was mostly street level with occasional forays into wholesaling amounts of up to a quarter ounce.
Zerafa was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for a period of four years, and three years’ probation.
Megan Louise McInnes
A Sunshine Coast mother trafficked extraordinary quantities of methamphetamine and GHB, linking up with other dealers to pool their money and expand the operation.
Baringa woman Megan Louise McInnes, 31, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court to 11 drug-related offences, most seriously three counts of trafficking and one each of possessing a commercial quantity of GHB and money laundering.
Justice Glenn Martin sentenced McInnes to seven-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, with immediate parole eligibility.
Phaedra Joy Barrett
A convicted Sunshine Coast synthetic cannabis trafficker has had her life “ruined” due to a seven-year delay in the court proceedings.
Phaedra Joy Barrett, 49, pleaded guilty in May to trafficking and producing dangerous drugs from April 2013 to August 2014, and possessing cash and other items used to run her synthetic cannabis business on the Sunshine Coast.
The mother of two had previously appealed a court ruling after she was found guilty by a judge-only trial and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in 2020. She served 198 days in prison before winning her appeal.
She was convicted and given a suspended 18-month sentence.
Judge Nicole Kefford said she considered the 198 days Barrett had already served when she determined the Doonan woman’s sentence.
Dylan Remmy Brady
A drug-dealing father who was attempting to sell 50 acid tabs to fuel his own drug habit has been given “one last chance” in order to stay out of jail.
Dylan Remmy Brady, 24, was asleep on a mattress in the lounge room when police searched his girlfriend‘s house and found acid tablets that belonged to him.
Crown prosecutor Alex Stark told the court the search warrant was executed on January 31, 2019, where they found 45 LSD tablets, his mobile phone and $775 cash.
Mr Stark told the court an analysis of Brady’s phone revealed he had offered to sell the tablets to people on January 23 and 30.
The court heard Brady had also offered to supply marijuana, Xanax and MDMA.
Brady pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court on Monday to 13 charges, including supplying and possessing dangerous drugs.
He sentenced Brady to one year jail, with an immediate parole release date.
Emma Lee Crang
A Coast mum was busted supplying meth after an operation targeting drug traffickers led police to her, a court has heard.
Emma Lee Crang, 37, who pleaded guilty to supplying meth, was supported in Maroochydore District Court by her mother and the father of her youngest child.
Judge Anthony Rafter said he had taken her early guilty plea and her personal circumstances into account when deciding a sentence and ordered her to 15 months on probation.
Trent Anthony Malcolm
A father found growing more than 100 marijuana plants fidgeted and cried in a Coast court while being sentenced for a string of drug offences.
Trent Anthony Malcolm was growing 111 marijuana plants and possessed a further 17.8kg of the drug when police raided a Cootharaba property on June 10.
Malcolm pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court to offences including 10 counts of supplying, producing and possessing dangerous drugs.
Malcolm cried after being sentenced to 18 months in jail, to be released on parole on July 30.
