Qld cops arrest 28 in drug syndicate bust

A prominent Sunshine Coast ex-realtor and junior rugby league football club volunteer trafficked an extraordinary amount of cocaine and cannabis, shelling out up to $25,000 at a time to purchase drugs, a court has heard.

Coolum Beach man Mahdi Green, 40, a former agent at LJ Hooker Peregian Beach and volunteer at a Sunshine Coast JRLFC, winning Volunteer of the Year in 2019, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday to one count of drug trafficking.

The court heard Green’s period of trafficking spanned from May 30 – October 1, 2017.

He came to police attention due to investigations into other major alleged drug suppliers on the Sunshine Coast as part of Operation Papa Argyle, which resulted in at least 28 arrests on 110 charges, including 64 charges of drug trafficking.

In total, Green purchased 50 pounds of cannabis, dropping a cool $25,000 at one point to purchase 10 pounds, and 616g of cocaine, spending $22,800 in one transaction for four ounces of cocaine.

A search warrant was executed on Green’s former Peregian Beach address on October 1, 2017, leading him to cease his illicit activities, before he was ultimately arrested and charged on January 20, 2018.

Defence counsel Peter Trout told the court his client had split from his long-term partner and the mother of his child in the months leading up to the period of drug trafficking and had become “habitually addicted to cocaine”.

He said profits from Green’s drug trafficking were sunk back into his “own extreme cocaine use”.

Mr Trout said Green was exposed to drugs from a young age and had struggled with periods of addiction throughout much of his adult life.

Green was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 16 months, on November 12 next year.

The duo alleged to have supplied Green in wholesale amounts, a 31-year-old Mountain Creek man and a 35-year-old Kippa-Ring man, will both have their charges mentioned in Brisbane Supreme Court on July 23.

They are both charged with four counts of drug trafficking – serious organised crime and other associated drug offences.

Their operation was alleged to have turned over $4.2 million and resulted in the sale of 831kg of cannabis, 1.8kg of cocaine, 3kg of MDMA powder and tens of thousands of MDMA capsules.

The driver for the duo’s alleged operation, Aspley man Reece Charles Ryan, 30, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment on August 15, 2019, for offences including drug trafficking – serious organised crime.

He was made parole eligible on December 31 last year.
