Micah Ivory: Nambour ice trafficker jailed on five offences

A Sunshine Coast dad had it all – a loving family, full-time work in the family business – until a fateful event in 2015 changed everything, a court has heard.

Life as a $1200-a-week ice addict

A Sunshine Coast roofer’s sad decline into trafficking in three different dangerous drugs and injecting up to a gram of ice a day was precipitated by a nasty fall on the job in which he hurt his back, a court has heard.

Nambour man Micah David Ivory, 35, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday to five serious drug offences.

They included three counts of trafficking in the dangerous drugs cannabis, ice and GHB, and two counts of supplying a dangerous drug, cocaine and MDMA.

The court heard Ivory’s drug trafficking operation occurred between February 2018 and June 2019, at Pacific Paradise and elsewhere.

Ivory was arrested and charged on June 24, 2019, following an analysis of his mobile phone.

The analysis revealed a street-level operation in cannabis, GHB and ice.

Full details of his drug trafficking were not able to be ascertained by police, although he had at least 21 customers and made at least 55 supplies throughout the period.

His drug trafficking was in breach of a one-month suspended jail sentence, the court heard.

Ivory has since been convicted of further drug offences.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges and then failed to appear for a court appearance, leading to his remand in custody on April 7 this year, where he has remained, the court heard.

Defence counsel Daniel Caruana told the court his client only ever used drugs recreationally until 2015, when he fell off a roof while on a job for his family’s roofing business.

Up until that point, he had a good work history and had remained out of trouble, but following his back injury sustained in the fall, Ivory “fell in with the wrong crowd”.

“It was a turning point in his drug use,” Mr Caruana told the court.

His addiction subsequently spiralled out of control, leading to Ivory injecting up to a gram of ice a day and the mother of his two children, aged seven and three, leaving him.

“It was a significant addiction,” Mr Caruana said.

He told the court his client had used his time in custody to get himself clean and was determined to stay on the straight-and-narrow for his children.

Justice Jean Dalton sentenced Ivory to four years’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of four years after serving 12 months, and three years’ probation.
