A Murgon mum has been jailed over a violent rampage through the streets of Murgon in which she threatened people with a steak knife and punched a random bystander.

Olga Lucille Chambers, 35, pleaded guilty at Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Friday, November 10, to the serious assault of a person in a wheelchair, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and intoxicated, stealing and multiple breaches of bail.

On Wednesday she was sentenced at Murgon Magistrates Court, appearing by video link.

The court heard Chambers was drinking at the Australian Hotel in Murgon on Thursday, November 9, when she became disruptive, entered the hotel kitchen and stole a steak knife which she proceeded to swing at people.

Chambers then went up to two sitting patrons, one of them in a wheelchair, and threatened “I’ll stab you,” the court heard.

After leaving the Australian Hotel, Chambers then assaulted a person in the street.

“She didn’t want to fight but you punched her with a closed fist in broad daylight … you held her hair and punched her face, you threw a can of coke at her, hitting her in the head, she had her hair pulled out and a bloody nose,” Mr Sinclair said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said there seemed to be no reason why Chambers threatened the wheelchair bound woman at all.

“You threatened to stab a woman in a wheelchair, I’ll repeat that, you threatened to stab a woman in a wheelchair.

“This conduct is utterly unacceptable,” he said.

Chambers also pleaded guilty to attempting to steal a carton of cigarettes and a bag of groceries at the Murgon Fruit Mart in January, and stealing lamb chops from the Murgon IGA.

In March she stole a carton of liquor from the Australian Hotel drive through.

The court heard Chambers had been convicted of multiple crimes since she turned 18.

These included 17 breaches of bail, 12 property offences, 11 public nuisance offences or drinking offences, and nine offences of assault or assault obstructing police.

He said the most recent charges were not out of character.

“It’s perfectly consistent of the track record you’ve held and maintained throughout your entire adult life.

“If anything, your behaviour has gotten worse recently,” he said.

Mr Sinclair said because Chambers continued to violate her parole, he doesn’t believe she can be rehabilitated.

“You had your chance and you used that chance to continue to offend.

“It shows you’re violent, it shows that you’re dishonest … rehabilitation, as I’ve said, seems very unlikely,” he said.

Mr Sinclair mentioned Chambers had also gone through the Murri court, a court which works with Aboriginal and Torres Islander defendants and provides them with support services to help with underlying contributors to their offending.

“You also made a mockery of the Murri court process.

“Progress reports show little progress and you continued to breach bail,” Mr Sinclair said.

Lawyer Babu Singh told the court in November Chambers had four children aged four to 15 and had raised them on her own while her partner was in jail.

Chambers had a “totally broken” family unit now, he said.

“Alcohol took the better of her life.”

Chambers dropped her head with her hands on her face as Mr Sinclair handed down his sentence of 12 months in prison with the possibility of parole of March 12, 2024.
