Investigations are under way into a spate of rock attacks launched near a Nanango primary school in which a taxi’s side window was smashed and a woman reportedly struck in the head.
Nanango taxi driver Vince Nord was driving back into town with two passengers about 8pm on Saturday when he said his cab was struck on Drayton St, next to Nanango State School.
“I actually thought I had run over like a rock or something on the ground until the fellas in the back said ‘no, somethings hit the rear window and smashed it’,” Mr Nord said.
He continued driving until his passengers convinced him to turn around have a look.
“By the time I got back you couldn’t see them … they were gone,” he said.
Nanango resident Rebekah Firmin said her partner’s car was struck with a stone in the same spot about half an hour after Mr Nord’s taxi was hit.
Ms Firmin said it happened about 8.30pm.
The car sustained damaged and although they turned around they could not see anyone.
“We believe that they would be hiding underneath the bridge near the primary school,” she said.
Reports of rock throwing were shared online too.
An anonymous user posting on the community page Around the Town Nanango said his partner was struck in the head.
“There are kids out next to the primary school bridge throwing rocks at cars. Hope ya had a good laugh hitting my missus in the head with a rock,” they said.
Another resident, Hayley Wilson said her car was hit the same night at the same spot about 10.30pm, when she was driving home from work.
Ms Wilson rang the police but didn’t hold out much hope.
“I rang last night when I got hit and they said they will send a car around but that’s no good, they just bolt,” she said.
Senior Constable Aaron Greenhill from the Nanango police station said one person had reported being struck by rocks that night.
“It’s still a current investigation at the moment,” Mr Greenhill said.
“We have some people in mind. There were people located in the area and we’re currently investigating it.
“We do have some people that we need to talk to that might help and assist in relation to the matter,” he said.
Constable Greenhill expressed his frustration at people complaining online rather than going to the police.
“My advice is to give us a call and make a complaint rather than go on Facebook and complain about it and not come into the police,” he said.
“Facebook is not going to investigate it.
“Contact us and report it.
“The more that is reported, the more we have an idea of how much damage that these people are causing.”
He said people can go to the Nanango station to make a complaint in person or call Policelink on 131 444.
