A major hurdle has been overcome for the proposed Murgon Independent Lifestyle Project, a complex of 12 units for adults with disabilities along with a caretaker's residence.
Before the registered charity could go ahead with accessing grants and funding, it was waiting to see if the South Burnett Regional Council would donate a portion of land in McMahon Park.
The Murgon site, located between Perkins Street and Goodchilds Drive, was selected for its low noise, safety buffers and room for activities such as vegetable gardens, chicken coops and outdoor sporting and recreational activities.
The council unanimously voted in favour of donating the land, with councillor Kathy Duff saying she was “really keen to see this happen” and it was “a good news story.”
The proposal was also supported by prominent people in the region who wrote letters highlighting the need for the development.
Murgon RSL president Kevin Gill explained how the development would benefit community members with disabilities.
“The provision of this accommodation will provide opportunities for adults with a disability to learn and maintain day to day life skills, participate in activities and most importantly reside in a safe and secure environment,” Mr Gill said.
The project is also supported by the Graham House Community Centre.
“Graham house are aware of some local residents who are extremely vulnerable because they have lost the person who was caring for them. Without specialist housing, they have no other option than to live at home.
“We are willing to explore ways in which we can support the operation of the project,” a statement said.
Federal LNP Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien also expressed his support for the project.
“I am pleased to support the proposal … and the benefits it will bring to the Murgon region,” he said.
No time frame has been set for the development but council officer Leanne Petersen said it would be a large undertaking.
“This is going to be a very, very big project, there’s a huge need for it no doubt but lots of planning, lots of design to occur,” Ms Petersen said.
