The South Burnett Council has unanimously agreed for land to be set aside for the development of a new dog park on Douglas Street in Murgon.

It follows a recent public meeting where members of the Murgon community and council officers took discussed the possibility of a park and an online poll was conducted.

Councillor Kathy Duff said the support for the park was “overwhelming” with 90 per cent of respondents in the poll agreeing the proposed location was suitable.

“From the feedback … the community wants that spot and they do want a dog park so I think it’s a good recommendation that we put that land aside and we try and fund it into the future,” Ms Duff said.

Most of the comments from the survey were also in favour of the park.

“Murgon really needs somewhere dogs and owners can go and safely let their dogs interact with other dogs in an off-leash area,” one respondent said.

Another said the park would also be good for tourists.

“Best idea in a long time, certainly needed not only for locals but for tourists travelling with dogs as well,” they said.

Not all comments were positive however with some questioning the proposed location.

“I think residents near the proposed park will get annoyed with the noise,” one response read.

Councillor Jane Erkens spoke about the benefits a dog park brought to a community and said it was a “great thing that we go ahead with this.”

“As our towns get bigger you do tend to lose that community bonding and people staying in touch with one another,” Ms Erkens said

“Dog parks are a great opportunity for dog owners to meet … and a great way for communities to keep in touch.”

The dog park will be funded through the council’s 10-year plan which aims to guide and support the development of sport and recreation across the South Burnett.

No date has been set for the Murgon dog park construction.
