It was 11pm on a Friday night when Shane Michael Charman crashed his Nissan Navara into a resident’s front fence on Cocoanut Point Drive at Zilzie.

Police and paramedics attended the scene and Charman was taken to hospital for treatment for broken ribs.

He subsequently returned a blood alcohol reading of .157.

In Yeppoon Magistrates Court on October 19, Charman, 32, pleaded guilty to drink-driving on the night of the August 11 crash.

The court heard that Charman had no prior offending of this sort and there was no restitution sought by the prosecution.

Representing himself in court, Charman told Magistrate Grace Kahlert that he was a baker by trade and he was trying to open his own bakery.

Before imposing a penalty, Ms Kahlert told Charman he was very lucky he did not injure himself more seriously or anyone else on the night of the incident.

“You went into a fence of someone’s home so you’ve caused a member of the community some damage,” she said.

Ms Kahlert fined Charman $1000 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
