A tradesman whose Central Queensland home maintenance business failed, has faced court for fraud.

Jayden Ashley Goodall, 27, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on September 27 to one count of fraud.

The court heard that Goodall’s offending happened in July last year while he was running a home maintenance business.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said Goodall provided a quote to Gladstone’s Harbour Sails Motor Inn for a job.

“The victim put down a payment... of $4950 - that being 62.5 per cent of the total quoted $7200,” Sgt Ongheen said.

“And as at the 15th of February, 2023, (Goodall) had not started any construction on that carport and did not answer calls from (Harbour Sails Motor Inn).”

Sgt Ongheen said police spoke to Goodall in April this year and he told them he was struggling financially and he used the deposit to pay for another job.

He was subsequently charged.

The prosecution sought restitution of $4950.

The court heard that Goodall had a six-page criminal history.

Sgt Ongheen said while Goodall did not have any prior fraud offending on his history, he did have “numerous” other dishonesty offences on it.

Solicitor Cassandra Ditchfield said Goodall, a father of two, was a carpenter who, at the time of committing this fraud offence, was running his own home maintenance business.

Ms Ditchfield said the fraud offence was “not so much based on dishonesty, but rather poor management in terms of his (Goodall’s) business.”

“He had every intention of returning and completing the job - he was simply not in a financial position to do so,” Ms Ditchfield said.

The solicitor said Goodall’s business had subsequently “gone under” and he had to return to work as an employee.

Ms Ditchfield said Goodall had supplied her with $2685 of the restitution prior to his court appearance.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Goodall $1000 and ordered he pay $4950 restitution.

A conviction was recorded.
