Drug drivers and drink drivers face Biloela Magistrates Court

A magistrate has told an operator in the mining industry she doesn’t understand why he would use “a disgusting, filthy drug.”

The following people pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on September 20 to either drink-driving or drug-driving.

Anthony Brian Lanyon.
Anthony Brian Lanyon.

Anthony Brian Lanyon, 49

Lanyon blew a blood-alcohol reading of .151 after he was intercepted by police at Biloela on August 4.

Lanyon pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Lanyon was self-employed and he was “extremely upset and very embarrassed” about his offending.

Mr Pepito tendered two references for his client.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said given Lanyon’s traffic history, this offence was out of character.

She fined him $1050 and disqualified him from driving for six months.

Matthew Eric Newman, 41

Newman was caught driving with methamphetamine in his system on the Burnett Highway at Biloela on August 7.

He pleaded guilty to drug-driving.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Newman was an operator in the mining industry and a father of three.

The court heard that Newman had no similar offending in the past five years.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale told Newman she did not understand why, with a good job, he would use meth as it was “a disgusting, filthy drug.”

She fined him $350 and disqualified him from driving for one month.

Ashly Dennis Robinson, 33

Robinson was caught driving with methamphetamine in his system on Callide Lane, Biloela, on July 22.

He pleaded guilty to drug-driving.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Robinson was employed with NDIS and a father of three.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale noted that Robinson had prior drug related offending on his history before fining him $1000 and disqualifying him from driving for six months.

Noah Cairnes, 19

Cairnes blew a reading of .164 after he was involved in a single-vehicle crash at Biloela on July 30.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

The court heard that prior to the incident, Cairnes had been drinking Hard Solos.

Due to injuries suffered in the crash, he was taken to Biloela Hospital.

The court heard that Cairnes had no prior history of this sort and representing himself, Cairnes said he was regretful and disgusted at his actions, and that he had caused shame and embarrassment to himself and his family.

He was fined $1050 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Shelby Leigh-Ann Davis, 19

Davis blew a blood-alcohol reading of .088 after police intercepted her on Calvale Road, Biloela, on August 20.

She pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

With no previous offending of this sort, Davis told Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale that she was working at Telstra, she did not have any excuse for her actions, and she had let herself and her family down.

Ms Beckinsale fined her $500 and disqualified her from driving for three months.

Nathan James Mcquillan, 19

Mcquillan was caught driving with cannabis in his system on Seventh Avenue, Theodore, on July 30.

He pleaded guilty to drug-driving.

The court heard that Mcquillan was on a provisional driver’s licence at the time and he had no prior offending of this sort.

He was fined $350 and disqualified from driving for three months.

Michael West, 64

West was caught driving with cannabis in his system on the Dawson Highway, Biloela, on July 27.

He pleaded guilty to drug-driving.

With no prior similar offending, West was fined $350 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Marsha Pam Power, 45

Power had methamphetamine and cannabis in her system when she was tested by police on Rainbow Street, Biloela, on July 13.

She pleaded guilty to drug-driving.

With previous offences of this sort on her history in the past five years, Power was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for six months.
