A Central Queensland mechanic has been sentenced for punching a woman in the face during a domestic violence assault.

Matthew Lionel Anderson, 44, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to charges including assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence).

The court heard that on April 1, Anderson and the aggrieved woman were at a Kin Kora residence when he “pulled her down” onto a bed and held her down with his forearm over her chest.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said Anderson then punched the woman in the left eye, causing her immediate pain.

The woman told police she woke up the next morning with a headache, her eye was swollen and she had facial bruising.

Photos of her injuries were tendered to the court.

Anderson had a three-page criminal history which included previous domestic violence offending, and these latest offences were committed while he was on parole.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Anderson was a father of five who worked as a mobile mechanic, and the relationship with the aggrieved woman was over.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Anderson to 12 months’ jail, declared 101 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, and

fixed immediate parole.

Convictions were recorded.
