A foreign driver allegedly responsible for a terrible highway crash that claimed the life of his girlfriend has not returned to Australia to finalise the reckless driving case against him.
A warrant remains open against Hungarian national Ferenc Isaak, who returned to his country months after the 2023 crash to finalise his partner’s funeral.
But through his lawyer he had told police he wanted to come back to Australia in early 2024 to have the case dealt with.
Mr Isaak and Fruzsina Strausz, 29 had been moving from Mackay to Brisbane when the vehicle he was driving crashed at St Lawrence on July 3, 2023.
The couple from Hungary were about to start a new life chapter and then 28-year-old Isaak had been planning to propose when just after 7am the Mitsubishi they were in left a straight section of the Bruce Highway for unknown reasons about 2km south of the Waverly Creek rest area.
The vehicle, which had been packed with all their personal belongings, rolled so violently Ms Strausz was partially ejected and came to rest on its wheels – tragically she died at the scene one of 17 lives lost from 17 crashes in the Mackay District in 2023.
Mr Isaak was flown to Rockhampton Hospital for treatment.
Following the crash Mr Isaak returned to Hungary, while in September 2023 Mackay’s Forensic Crash Unit issued an arrest warrant against him for one count of careless driving causing death.
Through his lawyer Mr Issak indicated he was hoping to return to Australia in six months for work and planned to have the matter finalised.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year’s jail or up to an $11,500 fine and at least a six-month licence ban.
As of January 2025 Mr Isaak has not returned to Australia to have the case finalised.
Mackay Forensic Crash Unit officer in charge Sergeant Michael Hollett said the warrant will remain active and if he returned he would he arrested.
