Tragic new details have been released about a fatal highway rollover that claimed the life of a young woman starting a new chapter in her life.
She and her partner, the driver of the vehicle, had been in the process of moving from Mackay to Brisbane when the horror incident occurred on the Bruce Highway near St Lawrence.
The vehicle had been packed with all their personal belongings.
It was just after 7am on a straight section of the road about two kilometres south of the Waverly Creek rest area when a Mitsubishi wagon left the roadway for unknown reasons and rolled “coming to rest back on its wheels”.
Tragically the passenger, a 29-year-old woman from Mackay, died at the scene.
The driver, a 28-year-old man also from Mackay, was flown to Rockhampton Hospital by RACQ CapRescue with unknown serious injuries, a Mackay police spokesman said.
Emergency services had to extricate the man from the vehicle and take him to a nearby home to allow landing access for the rescue chopper.
The on-board medical crew treated the man and flew him to Rockhampton for follow-up care.
The police spokesman said Rockhampton Forensic Crash unit officers would be speaking with him tonight as part of the investigation into the incident.
A Mackay police spokesman said there had been some intermittent showers around the time of the crash but it was unknown exactly what caused the vehicle to leave the highway and roll.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the crash or may have dashcam footage of the white Mitsubishi on the highway before the crash to contact Policelink.
Multiple emergency service crews, including Queensland paramedics and firefighters, were called to the scene and as a result of the crash the Bruce Highway was closed for several hours in both directions.
The council helped with traffic control.
Investigations continue.
