Harrowing new details can be revealed about a fatal rollover that claimed the life of a Hungarian woman south of Mackay, as police push forward in their investigation into the highway tragedy.
The driver of the Mitsubishi wagon, who was her partner, was planning to propose when his world was shattered early on July 3 at St Lawrence.
The couple, who were both from Hungary but living in Mackay, had been in the process of moving to Brisbane when the horror rollover occurred early on July 3.
It was just after 7am when the Mitsubishi left a straight section of the Bruce Highway for unknown reasons about 2km south of the Waverly Creek rest area and rolled coming to rest back on its wheels.
It is understood the 29-year-old woman was partially ejected from the vehicle during the rollover, which closed the highway for several hours.
Tragically she died at the scene.
The vehicle had been packed with all their personal belongings.
RACQ CapRescue flew her partner, a 28-year-old man, to Rockhampton Hospital for treatment for his injuries and he has since been released.
Emergency services had to extricate the man from the vehicle and take him to a nearby home to allow landing access for the rescue chopper.
There had been some intermittent showers on the day of the crash but it was unknown exactly what caused the vehicle to leave the highway and roll.
Police have appealed for anyone who saw the crash or may have dashcam footage of the white Mitsubishi on the highway before the crash to contact Policelink.
This was the first of three fatal crashes and two serious crashes that occurred across the Mackay and Whitsunday regions within 10 days prompting police to again push a message begging for road users to “think about what you a doing”.
The Bruce Highway at St Lawrence has been the scene of multiple road tragedies.
In February 2022 a 42-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a truck near the Kalarka Roadhouse.
In July 2017 29-year-old Sam Dunn died in a single vehicle crash 20km south of the Waverly St rest area after his vehicle left the road. Eight months later in October a 62-year-old Wynnum man died following a crash on the Bruce Highway.
In February 2009 five tourists including three Italians were killed in a fiery crash after a campervan and a sedan when a van collided head-on on the Bruce Highway at St Lawrence. Five months in July later a woman died in a crash also at St Lawrence.
The current road toll for the Mackay district in 2023 is eight deaths.
Investigations into the St Lawrence fatal crash continue.
