Police have issued an arrest warrant for a driver who allegedly caused the horror highway crash south of Mackay that claimed the life of his girlfriend.
Ferenc Isaak, 28 and Fruzsina Strausz, 29 had been moving from Mackay to Brisbane when the terrible tragedy occurred on July 3 at St Lawrence.
The couple was from Hungary but had been living in Mackay and about to start a new life chapter when just after 7am the Mitsubishi wagon Mr Isaak had been driving left a straight section of the Bruce Highway for unknown reasons about 2km south of the Waverly Creek rest area.
The vehicle, which had been packed with all their personal belongings, rolled coming to rest on its wheels during which Ms Strausz was partially ejected and tragically died at the scene.
He had been planning to propose to Ms Strausz before the fatal crash.
It can now be revealed that since the fatal rollover Mr Isaak has returned to Hungary.
Following the crash he had to be extricated from the vehicle and was then flown to Rockhampton Hospital for treatment for his injuries.
There had been some intermittent showers on the day of the crash but it was unknown exactly what caused the vehicle to leave the highway and roll.
Mackay Forensic Crash Unit officer in charge Sergeant Michael Hollett said on September 18 police issued an arrest warrant for Mr Isaak for the offence of careless driving causing death.
Sergeant Hollett confirmed his lawyer was notified and had told Mr Isaak, who is still in Hungary.
He said Mr Isaak indicated he was hoping to return to Australia in six months for work and planned to have the matter finalised.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year’s jail or up to an $11,500 fine and at least a six-month licence ban.
“If he does not return, the warrant will remain forever active on the police computer system until he does,” Sergeant Hollett said.
This was the first of three fatal crashes and two serious crashes that occurred across the Mackay and Whitsunday regions within 10 days prompting police to again push a message begging for road users to “think about what you a doing”.
The road toll figure for the Mackay District for 2023 is 14.
