New and soon-to-be businesses coming to Gympie | Full List
From fast food and eateries to four wheel drives, here is a list of recently opened businesses in the Gympie region and what’s on the way.
Gympie
Don't miss out on the headlines from Gympie. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Gympie will soon be home to some new and exciting businesses, as more new people begin to call the region home.
The flooding disaster of February 2022 had a catastrophic impact on the commercial and historic heart of Gympie - Mary Street - and so badly damaged so many businesses that many still have not reopened. Some may never return to the main street, others may never reopen.
The good news is that the commercial landscape is a forever changing one. So while we wait for some of our favourite businesses to reopen their doors, here are some positive changes that are about to happen or just have:
7-Eleven service station
Southside residents will soon be able to get their hands on Krispy Kreme donuts and slurpees at any time of the day or night, as work to build the Gympie region’s first 7-Eleven service station begins.
The multi-pump service station will be open 24 hours a day with a 212sq m shop, nine space carpark and room for a queue of 17 cars.
The development will replace the iconic Southside Store on Exhibition Rd, which has now been demolished after calling the site home for many decades.
New fast food development
A new drive-thru fast food outlet, tipped to be overlooking the Bruce Hwy adjacent to the Central Shopping Centre, is coming to Gympie.
Developer’s Cylinder Cove Pty Ltd, who are also the developers behind the 7-Eleven service station on the Southside, submitted an application to Gympie Regional Council to build the new fast food outlet in early 2022.
The restaurant will replace a string of shops next to Subway on River Rd, including Tramcars Bakery, Kebabs Gympie, and the now closed Johnny Dees.
Confirmation on which take away restaurant will occupy the redeveloped site has been hard to nail down, but Property Projects Australia, who are working alongside Cylinder Cove on the development, state on their website portfolio which fast food companies they have worked with in the past, and those include McDonald’s, Collins Food Group, Starbucks and Guzman Y Gomez.
Collins Food Group own KFC and American tex-mex fast food giant Taco Bell.
The Woolooga Longyard
Woolooga family the Crane’s have just opened their fifth and final business in a line of shops bringing the small country town of Woolooga back to life.
Caz and Matthew Crane injected new life into the historic Woolooga Trader after they moved to the Gympie region from the Sunshine Coast and began their business ventures in the country town.
The family owns five shops in the Woolooga Trader building, including a cafe and green grocer, an animal feed and rural supplies store, a hairdresser, and a bed and breakfast.
After the January 2022 floods caused a minor setback in their plans, the couple has now opened a fifth and final venture, The Woolooga Longyard, a bar and grill; and business is booming.
The Woolooga Longyard’s kitchen open from 5.30pm until 9pm every night.
The Beacon
A family business formerly known as Raffinatis has been reborn as a new cafe in Gympie’s CBD.
The Beacon, located in Mary St near the five-ways roundabout, has take-away and dine-in services in addition to Raffinatis previous popular catering and café business.
The cafe is run by Carol Weatly and her brother Leon Roulston, along with Ms Weatly’s daughter Peta Watson.
Ms Weatly said the business decided to set up a kitchen in Mary Street after having to rent kitchens for its catering service.
The new store opens later in the morning to provide coffee and dine-in to locals who have missed the morning coffee run.
The Beacon’s catering service offers delivery meals to everyone from truckers to the elderly, and special diet options to suit individuals.
Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria
Gympie pizzeria Mama’s and Papa’s is getting a makeover, after it was smashed during the February 2022 flood.
The business was one of the hardest hit during the record-breaking disaster, but was back on its feet during a major clean up.
The business then took to Facebook in March saying they were getting a “freshen up”, and had temporarily closed.
At the time of publishing, the pizzeria was still closed for refurbishments with no set date on when it will reopen.
Madill’s Suzuki, Gympie Mazda and Gympie MG
Gympie’s newest car brand will soon have a new home, as plans were revealed for a new dealership overlooking the Bruce Hwy on the southern outskirts of Gympie.
A development application for new signage at the proposed site at 2 Laurenceson Rd, Glanmire, revealed the dealership will house Gympie Mazda, Madill’s Suzuki and Gympie MG.
The lot is directly across from Bunnings on the Bruce Hwy, which has its own new development onsite which is expected to house a new four wheel drive franchise.
Currently, the three car dealerships run out of a lot on the corner of Excelsior Rd and Bruce Hwy at Gympie, near Gympie Central Shopping Centre.
Lifestyle 4x4
After months of speculation, one of the new businesses set to neighbour Gympie Bunning’s has been revealed.
Lifestyle 4X4 Gympie is a four-wheel drive accessories fitting business, dedicated to installing a range of Ironman gear.
The business is yet to open to the public, but no official opening date has been announced.
The remaining businesses in the lot remains empty, with no word yet on what else is to come for the highly-anticipated development.
Little H Cafe
It’s been less than six months since one of Southside’s newest cafes opened, and business has been booming.
Peter and Rina Yenn, originally from Gympie and Maryborough, respectively, opened Little H Cafe in the heart of the Southside after years of running a successful pub in Brisbane.
The cafe was named after their young daughter, Harper, and was previously the location of McIntosh Meats, MacDonald’s Meats and a Home Care supplies store.
