A man admitted to his mate that he had evaded police during a dangerous, high speed evasion in the Gladstone region and pleaded for a place to hide his car. He has pleaded guilty to 54 offences. Full details here.

A man sent his mate texts admitting to leading police on a dangerous chase which started in a rural town.

Jayden John Griffin, 22, pleaded guilty on Friday in Gladstone Magistrates Court to 54 charges including evasion and disobeying the speed limit.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd highlighted the worst of Griffin’s offending, which began on July 27, 2021, around 9.40am.

A court heard Miriam Vale police were patrolling their division when they saw Griffin driving a black Holden commodore travelling 23km/hr over the speed limit on the Bruce Highway.

Police did a U-turn and activated their lights and sirens, even pointing so Griffin knew they were attempting to intercept him.

Griffin then accelerated away drastically from the police car then overtook a car on continuous double white lines, then a semi-trailer truck on a blind corner.

As Griffin headed towards Bundaberg, police terminated their attempted intercept.

Checks on Griffin’s car found it was both unregistered and uninsured.

On September 2, around 4pm, police attended Griffin’s address and saw the same car which was involved in the pursuit and seized his phone.

On the phone police located a series of texts sent by Griffin to another man, including “Brooo I’m f---ed”, “I need somewhere to hide my car” and “I got chased this morning bro all good now I think IDK I gapped it to Bundy”.

Mr Boyd said Griffin had not only endangered himself and the police during the pursuit, but also innocent members of the public.

“This evasion offence is more serious than one which warrants the minimum penalty,” he said.

“The penalty imposed must ensure the defendant and others are deterred from committing further offences in the future.”

Griffin’s lawyer Pierre Lamersdorf said to Griffin’s credit he handed himself into police hours after the evasion offence took place.

Acting Magistrate Patrick Murphy convicted and sentenced Griffin to 18 months probation and fined him $7,392.50. Convictions were recorded.
