Uber responds after QLD driver Scott Cabrie murdered on the job

Rideshare giant Uber has responded to questions around driver safety following the murder of Fraser Coast driver Scott Cabrie.

Ride-share giant Uber has stopped short of commenting on whether safety measures for drivers will be ramped up following the murder of Fraser Coast driver Scott Cabrie.

Mr Cabrie was a pioneer of Uber driving on the Fraser Coast, and in an interview in 2019 told this publication that he had been able to “meet some great people” in his job.

Police allege Mr Cabrie was murdered after taking a job on Tuesday last week, with his Nissan X-Trail found burnt out and his body later found at the Howard boat ramp.

Two teenagers have been charged with murder and robbery offences.

An Uber spokesperson termed the murder “shocking”.

“This is a tragic and shocking incident, and our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Mr Cabrie’s loved ones during this difficult time,” they said.

“Our law enforcement engagement team is working with the Queensland police to assist in their investigation, and we are currently reaching out to Mr Cabrie’s next of kin to offer our support.“

This publication asked Uber if there were any concerns around driver safety or if the incident would prompt additional safety measures to be adopted.

Those questions were not answered.

Uber says it offers support to its drivers by way of insurance to help them in case anything goes wrong and also has former police officers on its team who are available at all hours.
