Missing Fraser Coast Uber driver Scott Cabrie found dead, two teens charged with murder

A popular Uber driver is dead and two teens have been charged with his murder in a shocking end to a missing person search on the Fraser Coast.

A Queensland Uber driver is dead and two teens have been charged with his murder after a week-long search sparked fears for the 47-year-old’s safety.

Popular Hervey Bay driver Scott Cabrie had not been heard from since Monday.

His distressed friends and colleagues had raised the alarm on social media and with police, saying the disappearance of the driver, who provided lifts in his blue Nissan X-Trail, was out of character and both his mobile phones had been turned off.

It's understood police will allege Mr Cabrie was killed during the course of an Uber trip.

The Queensland Police Service confirmed on Sunday a 17-year-old had been charged with murder after a body was found.

He will also face additional charges of robbery and deprivation of liberty – unlawfully detain.

A second teen has now also been charged with murder in relation to Mr Cabrie’s death.

About 6.25pm Sunday officers attended a Hervey Bay address, where they took an 18-year-old Sunshine Acres man into custody.

He has been charged with murder, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, arson, armed robbery and deprivation of liberty – unlawfully detain.

He has been refused police bail and will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday.

As of 7pm Sunday, Power House Rd, Howard, and the boat ramp are closed to the public.

Mr Cabrie, from Toogoom, had been officially reported missing on February 10. He had last been seen leaving a home at Toogoom at 6pm on February 6.

“Investigations identified that the man’s vehicle had been located burnt out near Wieland Road at Pacific Haven on the morning of Tuesday, February 7,” the statement read.

“Police subsequently launched a search operation in the area and surrounds, utilising officers, drone technology, water police and SES volunteers.

“Just after 11.30am today (Sunday), a body believed to be the 47-year-old man, was located near the boat ramp on Powerhouse Rd at Howard.

“Subsequent investigations led police to issue a search warrant at a Pacific Haven address, where a 17-year-old male was taken into custody.”

The teen has been charged with one count each of murder, arson and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. His bail has been refused.

He will appear before Hervey Bay Children's Court. Investigations into the circumstances of the man’s death remain ongoing.

Police appeal to anyone who may have information or dashcam footage regarding the movements of the blue 2017 Nissan X-Trail bearing Queensland registration 675YVF on Torbanlea Pialba Rd between 11pm and midnight on Monday February 6, to come forward.

Mr Cabrie was among the original Uber drivers to bring the rideshare service to Hervey Bay in 2019.

He was known for his friendly personality and often displayed gifts on his dashboard from happy customers including drawings from children and a handmade paper box bearing the words “Scotty’s tips”.
