The Dalby and Chinchilla courts are routinely dealing with shockingly violent crimes, from domestic violence incidents to broad daylight assaults.

Here is a list of some of the region’s most violent cases and what happened when the offenders faced justice.

Engine revving leads to ‘jack handle’ assault

A man was left with a horrific facial injury after an Oakey man struck him with a tool during a disturbing night-time attack on a quiet street.

Dalby Magistrates Court was told David Nicholas Carne brutally attacked the other man after a short dispute on June 8, sparked by the victim confronting him about revving his engine in the street.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 50-year-old stopped his vehicle while the victim approached the driver’s side door, and Carne struck the other man in the face with a jack handle before driving off.

The victim was left with a “significant cut” to his forehead, which required 10 stitches.

Carne pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed. He was sentenced to six months’ jail, wholly suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay $500 compensation to the victim.

Dad attacks recent chemo patient with plank of wood

A Brisbane father who whacked a recent chemotherapy patient with a large plank of wood has been handed jail for his brutal assault.

Kahuihonepotaka Duncan Smith Bason was walking along Drayton Street in Dalby on the evening of May 8, 2020, when two men asked how he was going from across the street.

Crown prosecutor Amy Stannard told the court the former aquatic centre worker replied to the two men to not come near him, as he “wasn’t in a good mood”.

Dalby District Court heard as the two men approached, the now 23-year-old grabbed a 50cm plank of wood and struck one of the men in the face before fleeing the scene.

Bason pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and was sentenced to nine months’ jail, but released on immediate parole.

Violent man bashes two partners in less than two years

A 38-year-old violent Cunnamulla man walked from court despite bashing two of his former partners within two years.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Le Grand said William Walter John Jordan’s first assault occurred in April, 2019 in Chinchilla, where he attacked his ex-partner.

Jordan spent almost a year in custody before being released on bail, and then punched his new partner multiple time in the body and face at Leslie Dam in November, 2020.

Jordan pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of utensils or pipes, and possession of property suspected of being used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

He then pleaded guilty to obstructing police, breaching bail, failing to appear, and public nuisance.

Jordan was sentenced to three years’ jail, but was released on immediate parole. A total of 625 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

Woman punches cop during attempted arrest

A woman was back behind bars after she punched a Chinchilla policeman in the face while he was surrounded by a mob of abusive bystanders.

Dalby Magistrates Court was told police attended a Mayne Street address to arrest a wanted person, rousing the ire of Ashleigh Meagan Lawton.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said police found themselves surrounded by aggressive onlookers who were swearing and yelling at them during the arrest.

He then punched the arresting officer in the cheek with a semi-closed fist, the court heard.

Lawton pleaded guilty to serious assault on police and was sentenced to six months’ jail, which was wholly suspended for 12 months.

Mum’s jail time for horror neighbour assault

A Jandowae mother was jailed for her savage assault on an elderly woman and her daughter during a disturbing neighbourhood dispute.

Dalby District Court heard Jessica Ellen Creevey had been screaming repeatedly in Jandowae while her victims slept next door on April 23, 2020, with the disturbance prompting the elderly mother to go outside and turn the hose on Creevey.

The victim said the 33-year-old vaulted the fence and jumped on her, where she was “punched to hell” by Creevey.

The court heard the victim’s daughter rushed outside and pulled Creevey off her, with Creevey then turning her violent rage on the younger woman and punching her repeatedly.

Creevey pleaded guilty to serious assault, and assault occasioning bodily harm, and was sentenced to 12 months’ jail.

A parole release date was set for July 18, 2021.

Shocked onlookers watch man punch two people in bottle-o

An unprovoked attack at a Dalby bottle-O was witnessed by shocked onlookers when a man repeatedly punched a woman in the head after also striking her friend in the face.

Dalby Magistrates Court heard Nigel Robert Turnbull was seen on CCTV footage approaching two people at the Windsor Hotel on December 26, 2020.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 34-year-old punched the man in the face once, then punched the woman “several times in the head” when she tried to pull him away from her friend.

Turnbull pleaded guilty to common assault and committing a public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises.

He was given six months’ jail, which was wholly suspended for 18 months.
