Workmates of a Highfields man who died after his truck rolled on a remote road on the Western Downs have started building a small memorial at the site, just a few hours after his death.

It is understood the 31-year-old man was on his way to work when he left the road, hit a tree and rolled his vehicle near the intersection of the Jinghi Connection Rd and Old Burrandowan Rd near at Jinghi around 6am Tuesday.

Police, paramedics and firefighters rushed to the scene, but the man could not be saved.

The road remained closed to traffic as the Queensland Police Service Forensic Crash Unit investigates the cause.

The fatal crash is the latest in a horror period on the roads of the Darling Downs and Western Downs, after a crash at Highfields claimed the life of a 20-year-old on Sunday, and another crash claimed the life of a 37-year-old Kogan man on Saturday evening.

Queensland Fire Department Inspector Hamish Bowden said the tragic incident on Tuesday served as a reminder to drive with caution.

“It is unfortunately not uncommon,” he said.

“Our guys have been to a number of crashes over the recent period, it is tragic coming into Christmas.

“It is something they take home to their families.”

Inspector Bowden called on drivers to slow down and focus on the road.

“It is all about driving to the conditions,” he said.

“Country roads have their own hazards compared to the city, drive to the conditions and slow down if you need to.

“It is a very busy time of year, everyone has places to be so it is really unfortunate when this happens.”

Motorists were urged to avoid the area as the road will be closed for several hours.

Witnesses said the man’s colleagues left work as soon as they heard about the crash and had erected a cross to mark their friend’s death.

The man worked for local earth moving business Joe Wagner Group, based in Chinchilla.

“This tragic accident has deeply impacted our entire team,” a JWG spokeswoman said.

“During this difficult time, we are doing our best to prioritise the well-being of our employees and their families by providing immediate access to counselling services and support resources.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and kindly ask that the privacy of the family and our employees is respected during this time.”

The man was on his way to work at the Wambo Wind Farm construction site for which Vestas is the principal contractor.

This is the second worker death to occur under Vestas’ watch after a 38-year-old man was crushed by a wind turbine blade at the Golden Plains Wind Farm construction site on November 11.

It is understood work has stopped at the Wombo site while Vesta and the project partners investigated the matter.

The 83-turbine project is a joint venture between Cubico Sustainable Investments and the Queensland government-owned electricity provider Stanwell.

In an unrelated matter, emergency services were called to a second crash in the area, at Cooranga North.

A QFD spokesman said the B-double tipped onto its side on Kingaroy-Jandowae Rd about 6.30am.

The driver was able to free himself from the wreck.

Paramedics treated them for minor injuries and transported them to the Dalby Hospital in a stable condition.

This article was originally published saying two people were injured and had died, but that has since been clarified.
