First components for 83 turbine Wambo Wind Farm near Jandowae soon to be installed

The first turbine components have arrived at Wambo Wind Farm, with the Western Downs project expected to power more than 300,000 homes when full operational. Find out more here.

Wind farm turbine completes test run to Western Downs

Production of a major renewable energy project in the Western Downs has taken a step forward after the first turbine components safely arrived in a logistic transport test-run.

Wambo Wind Farm has gotten underway with the delivery of the first turbine components to the Jandowae site last week.

Due to the sheer size of the blades, energy company Stanwell conducted a test run on September 30. The blade left from the Port of Brisbane at 10pm and travelled overnight, to avoid traffic along the Warrego Highway.

A second test run was undertaken on Tuesday this week with the convoy accompanied by police and pilot vehicles

The project is now expected to conduct regular deliveries of two wind turbines a week before two of the country’s tallest cranes will be used to erect the wind turbines.

When complete the project will feature 83 wind turbines providing enough energy for more than 300,000 homes and creating 400 jobs.

“The arrival of these components means we are progressing well towards stage 1 of the project becoming operational next year, bringing online a total of 252MW, which is enough to power 165,000 homes,” Australian head of Cubico Country David Smith said in a press release.

“Cubico and Stanwell recognise that these deliveries may cause inconvenience for some in the local community and along the route and do appreciate your patience and understanding.”

In a press release Stanwell chief executive Michael O’Rourke said the wind turbines were a significant step towards reaching clean energy goals

“The delivery of the first wind turbine components to the Wambo Wind Farm site is an exciting milestone for the project,” he said.

“Under this important partnership with global renewable powerhouse Cubico, Stanwell will own 50 per cent of the energy produced and we will purchase the rest of the power from Cubico under a 15-year agreement.

“That brings us another 506MW closer to Stanwell’s target of 9 to 10GW of clean energy by 2025.”
