A 25-year-old Tara father has offered a strange excuse in court after he was found to have been stealing roadside signs for the better part of a month.

Bradley Michael Mcclelland appeared in Dalby Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to theft.

The court was told that between August 13 and September 19, 2024 Mcclelland stole a number of signs from roadworks along Tara Kogan Rd.

The missing signs were noticed by Western Downs Regional Council workers who reported the matter to police.

Mcclelland told the court he had stolen the signs to warn people entering his driveway of the potholes and rough conditions.

Magistrate Kathleen Payne scolded Mcclelland and described the offending as a “foolish decision”.

“Removing signs which have been put in place to protect road users is a danger to the community,” she said.

When sentencing Ms Payne took into account it had been three years since Mcclelland had been before court and fined him $1500.

No conviction was recorded.
