Really, is there anything Brisbane does better than breakfasts?
Well, yes, actually. The boozy, bottomless brunch. They’re usually no-rules kind of affairs, flouting traditional mealtimes (allowing for a luxuriant weekend sleep-in) and blithely snubbing standard breakfast fare.
Fancy dumplings as your first meal of the day? Or how about a fish taco, washed down with a margarita? Relax, we’ve got you, compadre.
To that end, here are five of the best bottomless brunches Brisbane is dishing up (and pouring out) should you wake up hungry-thirsty.
Chu the Phat, South Brisbane
www.chuthephat.com.au
Slept in? Chu the Phat’s all day boozy brunch runs until 8pm, so no need to panic.
The colourful venue that expands tardis-like from a small entrance in lively Fish Lane to reveal a double-storeyed, glass-walled interior with an industrial-meets-modern aesthetic, has a well-priced Super Sunday brunch offering.
Settle into a booth and graze through the $60 banquet menu of contemporary pan-Asian snacks – like wagyu dumplings and duck steamed buns, buttermilk fried chicken ribs, or stir-fried pork, along with a two-hour package of Aperol spritz, beer, wine or non-alcoholic drinks. Walk it off afterwards with a wander down Fish Lane to view its notable street art.
Fiume Rooftop Bar, Crystalbrook Vincent Hotel, Howard Smith Wharves
www.crystalbrookcollection.com/vincent/offers/brisbane-brunch
Beneath the steel girder underbelly of the Story Bridge, Fiume has one of the best views in Brisbane, overlooking the river and the city skyscrapers. It’s the perfect lofty, breeze-catching oasis from which to observe the hustle of Howard Smith Wharves too.
From 10am on Sundays, you can take a table among the greenery and graze through a set menu of sweet and savoury options for $110, including mix your own mimosas, bellini and champagne cocktails.
There’s also the possibility to upgrade for an extra $30 to include three signature cocktails; a Bloody Mary, the Aperol-based “Sunday Bliss” or a martini made on Tamborine Mountain Distillery’s limoncello. Or swap out the cocktails for bottomless Taittinger champagne.
Rita’s-Tequila Taqueria, Teneriffe
www.ritasbar.com.au
There’s not a drop of Mexican blood between the two owners of Rita’s, but there are some serious credentials.
Also owners of neighbour Siffredi’s Spaghetti Bar, Ollie Hansford who was former head chef at Stokehouse and Aleks Balodis, opened this taco and tequila bar in November 2022 and cheerfully acknowledge that food borrows from more locales than just Mexico.
“The only thing Mexican about this menu is the tequila and tortillas. And we aren’t sorry about it,“ the introduction to the snacky menu reads.
So popular were Rita’s Sunday bottomless brunches, they’ve had to extend them to Saturdays as well.
Between 10 and 2 for $75, you can eat your absolute fill of tacos; perhaps crispy fish with pea and jalapeño salsa and nori, or chili caramel pork, but don’t get too attached – they change weekly. (There are always two vegan options too.)
Included drinks for two hours are jugs of margarita, available in 8 different pick-and-mix fruity flavours.
Stanley Restaurant, Howard Smith Wharves
www.stanleyrestaurant.com.au/yum-cha
Yum cha, plus champagne equals a pretty fine way to begin winding down the weekend.
At the buzzy Howard Smith Wharf precinct, overlooking the Brisbane River, upmarket Cantonese diner Stanley, offers a yum cha and champagne brunch between 11 and 3pm for $150.
Dining is from the banquet menu and includes baskets of steamed dumplings such as scallop siu mai, prawn har gow, XO seafood or duck and mushroom; crisp prawn and chive spring rolls, chill and garlic spare ribs and if you’re feeling more adventurous, spicy chicken feet or black bean tripe.
Included is a two-hour package of Louis Roederer champagne.
Southbeach, South Bank
www.southbeach.net.au/bottomless-brunch
OK, so it’s not Miami. It’s not even Mooloolaba, but there is a beach and you can pack your bathers and have swim at South Bank’s Street’s Beach, although we’d definitely advise going easy on the ‘boozy’ part if you’re intending getting in.
Otherwise, just kick back post-brunch and enjoy the palm-tree framed view and the party vibe. Served between 10 and 12, the menu is breakfast-y with salmon and cream cheese croissants, eggs Benedict, avocado toast, pastries and fruit, accompanied by bottomless spritzers, mimosas, bloody Marys and lager.
