Westside schools dominate top OP bands

One in four westside schools have made it into the state’s top 20 for OP results, a new report has revealed.

Ambrose Treacy College has come in at 18th place in Queensland in the latest OP results, just five years after opening.

Indooroopilly’s Ambrose Treacy College has blitzed the latest Year 12 results despite opening only five years ago.

ATC came in at 18th spot in Queensland for students in the top five Overall Position (OP) bands, one place ahead of St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace (Terrace), according to the 2019 Year 12 Outcomes report, compiled by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

The report, revealed on the weekend, revealed Year 12 results for more than 500 high schools across the state.

Sixteen of ATC’s 41 OP-eligible students received an OP1-5, or a very creditable 39 per cent.

In comparison, 72 of the 187 eligible Terrace students were in the OP1-5 bands, or 38.5 per cent.

Incoming principal Chris Ryan, who took over from founding principal Michael Senior late last year, was previously deputy principal at Terrace.

“We are very proud of the achievements of the Ambrose Treacy College Year 12s of 2019 - our inaugural Senior students,’’ Mr Ryan said.

“The achievements of the entire cohort were very pleasing with 100 per cent of our students achieving a QCE, 39.024 per cent of our OP-eligible students achieving an OP 1-5, and 100 per cent achieving an OP 1-15.

“A variety of vocational certificates and diplomas were also achieved by our students.

“We are excited to have our first group of ATC Old Boys and look forward to sharing their post school journey with our community as we continue to develop and grow.”

The school will also officially open, and bless, its new multi-storey building for senior students, Waterford West, this Friday. It features classrooms, gathering places and a wellbeing centre.

The results also showed the westside area has continued its traditional dominance of Year 12 results.

One on three of the Brisbane schools in the top 20 were from the westside, and seven had 30 per cent or more of their students in the OP1-5 band.

Corinda’s St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School came in at fifth in the state and topped the Brisbane South education region.

Exactly half of its 36 eligible students were in the OP1-5 band.

St Aidan’s principal Toni Riordan said she was really proud of all of her students’ successes, whether that be an OP result, Vocational Education qualification or an extra-curricular achievement.

“We are really proud of the way St Aidan’s staff have been able to adopt the new ATAR system, while not taking our eyes off the OP system for the 2019 seniors,” she said.

“We feel that we are very well prepared for the introduction of the ATAR system this year, and look forward to what 2020 brings for senior schooling in Queensland and at St Aidan’s.”

St Aidan’s school captain Lilyan Sullivan said she plans to study medicine with the goal of becoming a paediatrician specialising in autism, and plans to get through the year by keeping to routine.

“I don’t allow myself to procrastinate ... I always study first, then complete compulsory homework, as I find it more motivating in that order,” she said.

Vice-captain Paris Teevan said she would use the syllabus to get the best results she can to gain entry into either paramedicine, nursing or psychology.

“Using the syllabus and checkpoints provided by QCAA is something I live by when I study, it helps so much to cull anything unnecessary and refine what I focus on closer to exams,” she said.

Brisbane Boys’ College at Toowong was 15th, with 40.71 per cent of its eligible students in the 1-5 band.

There were 140 Brisbane Boys’ College students who received an OP score last year, with 57 receiving a score between one and five.

It narrowly edged out Ashgrove’s Mt St Michael’s College (16th), where 40.58 per cent of eligible Year 12s achieved a OP1-5.

Brisbane Girls Grammar School was the best of the Brisbane schools, with 52.4 per cent of students receiving an OP between one and five.

However the two small Gold Coast schools which beat it into first and second place had very small numbers of highly-achieving students and the proportion of its school population who were eligible for an OP was vastly lower.

Girls Grammar School had a total of 100 students receive an OP between one and five, out of 191 students who got an OP score.

Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane, had the second highest proportion of high end OP scores in the Brisbane North area, with 51.0 per cent of students receiving a score between one and five.

Of the 202 students who received an OP at Brisbane Grammar School, 103 received a result between one and five.

Schools with fewer than 10 students who received an OP were not included in this analysis.

The 2019 student cohort will be the last class of Queensland students to receive an OP score, with the state moving Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks from this year – in line with other states.
