Brisbane South’s top high schools for OP results have been revealed with students across the region scoring impressive results.
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority released the 2019 Year 12 results for more than 500 high schools across the state this week.
The 2019 student cohort will be the last class of Queensland students to receive an OP score, with the state moving Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks from this year – in line with other states.

The results show half of the students at St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, Corinda, received an OP between one and five, the highest proportion of high-end results in the area.
St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School had a total of 18 students receive an OP between one and five, out of 36 students who got an OP score.
St Aidan’s Principal Toni Riordan said she was proud of the way St Aidan’s staff had been able to adopt the new ATAR system, while not taking their eyes off the OP system for the 2019 seniors.
“We feel that we are very well prepared for the introduction of the ATAR system this year, and look forward to what 2020 brings for senior schooling in Queensland and at St Aidan’s,” Ms Riordan said.
“The OP results of the 2019 cohort are a testament to our students hard work and dedication to their studies, and the commitment and professionalism of our teachers.”
Ms Riordan congratulated the 2019 cohort on their results, adding the school was proud of all of the students’ successes, whether that be an OP result, Vocational Education qualification or an extra-curricular achievement.
“It is particularly important to us that every student leaves St Aidan’s with a pathway to her desired career and in 2019 every student finished with a qualification, whether that be a QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) or QCIA (Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement),” she said.
Brisbane State High School at South Brisbane and Cannon Hill Anglican College had the second highest proportion of high end OP scores in the Brisbane South area, with 47.3 per cent of students from both schools receiving a score between one and five.
Of the 374 students who received an OP at Brisbane State High School, 177 received a result between one and five.
There were 74 Cannon Hill Anglican College students who received an OP score last year, with 35 receiving a score between one and five.
CHAC principal Gary O’Brien said 2019 saw the College achieve some of the school’s best results ever, continuing the positive trend in student results.
“Our OP success is a result of our commitment to inspiring students through a curriculum and pedagogical approach that motivates and challenges, that allows them to discover and follow their passions and encourages students to be the very best they can be,” Mr O’Brien said.
“CHAC is preparing students for a world marked by unprecedented rates of change and disruption. The College seeks to combine a high-quality education with the development of the soft skills required to prosper and flourish in a workplace that values critical and creative thinking, and one that discourages passive, unreflective, and uncritical reception of information, and that rewards lifelong patterns of thinking.
“This focus and commitment ensures our students are given every opportunity to develop to their full potential in a broad field of pursuits, not just academically.”
Cavendish Road State High School was not far behind the best performing private schools with 36.1 per cent of eligible students receiving an OP between 1 and 5.
Cavendish Rd Executive Principal Richard Usher said though the school had a solid reputation, last year’s students recorded the school’s best OP results since the inception of the OP system of tertiary entrance ranking.
“We had five OP 1 students, 35 per cent of the cohort an OP 1 to 5 and 94 per cent an OP 1-15,” Mr Usher said.
“There is no secret to success. There is an ethos in State schools to continually improve and the last couple of years we set out to do even better for our students.
“Natural talent and aptitude is optimised where at the core is deeply committed world class teaching and learning and a belief and a drive that every student no matter their circumstance can achieve personal best. The scoreboard then takes care of itself.”
Schools with fewer than 10 students who received an OP were not included in this analysis.
