Principal Cherylynne Gostelow said the strong result was due to a strong staff and student commitment to succeed.

“At Calvary, we have seen steady growth in our senior results over the past few years as we have adopted a unique learning environment with a relentless commitment to cater to the diverse needs of our students,” she said.

“2019 was a very successful year for our seniors with 37 per cent of our OP eligible students achieving an OP under 5 and 92 per cent of our students achieving an OP under 15.

“While results are one important indicator of a school’s success, at Calvary we want every child to know, all of the time, that they matter, that they are a name and not a number and that they will always be part of our Calvary family.

“We are immensely proud of our students and what they have accomplished.”

Ms Gostelow said the college was recognised for its fearless and authentic approach to increasing a child’s capacity to learn, grow and thrive at their own pace.

She said staff encouraged students to “own their learning” by providing them with strategies to be independent, resilient, and responsible lifelong learners.

The school was also where last year’s Queensland Rhodes Scholar studied.

Indigenous lawyer Jordan English, who was dux at the Carbrook college, graduated in 2011 and then went on to complete a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland.

Ms Gostelow said Mr English was a role model and mentor for young indigenous Australians who wished to work in the legal profession.

St Francis College, Crestmead, had the second highest proportion of high-end OP scores in the Logan area, with 33.3 per cent of students receiving a score between one and five.

Of the 12 students who received an OP at St Francis College, four received a result between one and five.

Third on the list from Logan was John Paul College at Daisy Hill, where 31.5 per cent of eligible students received an OP between 1 and 5.

The school achieved two OP1s last year — the school’s dux Minuka Mendis and the school’s Proxime Accessit Tiffany Wang.

There were 54 John Paul College students who received an OP score last year, with 17 receiving a score between one and five.

College principal Karen Spiller said she was proud of the level of achievement from the year 12s last year.

“They achieved the highest-ever scaled mean on the Queensland Core Skills Test for the College,” she said.

“This is a testament to their focus and commitment to their studies and preparation for the QCS test.

“They also recorded the highest ever OP 1-5 result, and when the Certificate IV, Diploma and International Baccalaureate results are considered, 70 per cent of all JP college students achieved the equivalent of OP 1-9.”

Park Ridge State High School was Logan’s eighth ranked on the list, and the best performing state high school.

Twenty per cent of its eligible students received an OP between 2 and 5.

Another high achieving year 12 school was Marsden State High, the largest state high school in Logan.

Marsden State High School Principal Andrew Peach was proud of his year 12 students.

Principal Andrew Peach said he was very proud of the 2019 graduates and said some of Logan’s schools did not get mention as they had fewer than 10 students undertaking OP pathways.

“It is interesting to note Marsden State High School has more students undertaking the OP pathway than many private schools, and schools that were once considered to be more academic in nature,” he said.

“Our approach to encourage our kids to challenge themselves in the academic fields, and to aspire to university pathways, is highlighted by the fact that we have more graduates getting an OP than a school like John Paul College.

“All of our OP kids have received offers to attend university to continue their learning journey.

“We’re also really proud of our students who have undertaken the range of other pathway options available including further learning at TAFE or through apprenticeships and the opportunities many of our kids have had to step directly in to the workforce.

“We’ll continue to support our kids to follow their passions, and with the construction of our new $20 million STEM Excellence Building for 2021, we will have a full range of facilities covering excellence in vocational education, the arts and sports.

“It will be interesting to see what impact the ATAR system has on encouraging more kids and maybe their schools to aim for university entrance.”

Schools with fewer than 10 students who received an OP were not included in the analysis.

The 2019 student cohort will be the last class of Queensland students to receive an OP score, with the state moving Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks from this year – in line with other states.
