The Grumpy Baker
Contemporary
Enter a space constantly engulfed in the warm, comfortable, diet-dissolving smell of bread baking and you'll wonder what anyone could possibly be grumpy about. This bakery/cafe is super-busy, with queues of customers streaming in for takeaway, from sausage rolls and oozy-centred pastries to loaves of bread (the fig and walnut bread is dense, honey-laced and delightfully figgy). Those who eat in can enjoy shakshouka, Israeli baked eggs with tomato casse served with little dishes of yoghurt and spices and a hunk of bread, and the rest of the Israeli-influenced breakfast menu, including sweet cous cous with yoghurt and rhubarb and a baked omelette with mint and feta. Warning: not-too-sweet banana bread is impossible to resist.
