Island Dreams Cafe
Malaysian
This turquoise-toned, family-run eatery is the only one in Australia serving food from Christmas Island, a cuisine heavily influenced by Malaysian and Chinese cooking. Homemade roti, the buttery flatbread, and murtabak (the fancier version, filled with egg, meat and sweet potato) are popular, as are chicken and lamb satay, the marinade and peanut sauce made from scratch. Locals love ayam panggang (chilli chicken curry) with a Somali cuppa - black tea with a frothy, milky head added to the menu at the request of local Africans. The multi-coloured fish crackers are a must: they're made by the owner's family in Port Hedland, WA.
