Contemporary

The quieter Harbour Tunnel end of Riley Street owns a little secret in this bakery cafe, which punches well above the square footage of its elegant, dark and rustic room. Meat pies from the hanging brown-paper menu are a stand-out, the pastry of a slow-braised lamb pie proving buttery, flaky and beautifully delicate. Then there's the dark, brooding chocolate, raspberry and buttermilk cake, slabs of nougat, granny apple galettes and the ever-popular panna cotta lamington. Four tiny tables mean you can stay for a Rabbit Hole tea or a slightly frothy Coffee Alchemy piccolo ($3.50).
