The Bell Jar

Cafe

Since the Bell Jar opened its doors, this drab end of Smith Street has become a hotspot. It's a breezy cafe with a casual look- wooden tables and op-shop chairs- and the owners are serious about food and coffee. Breakfast is grand- the spicy corn cakes, rich with whole kernels, are teamed beautifully with bacon, chilli and eggs, and a tortilla stuffed with goat's cheese, potato and chorizo is superb. Strong flavours- spicy jerk chicken and coleslaw sandwiches or mushrooms on walnut pesto and feta- are the order of the day. And the cheery and chatty staff know how to make you feel welcome.
