Trump says he won’t fire Powell, ‘unless he has to leave for fraud’

Washington | President Donald Trump has revived concerns about his willingness to interfere with the independent Federal Reserve, undermining confidence in US financial assets, despite stating he has no immediate plans to remove its chairman, Jerome Powell.

In news that rattled financial markets on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), US media reported Trump had informally polled Republican House members over whether he should fire Powell, whom he has attacked for not lowering interest rates fast enough.
