The British general election on Thursday broke records for the Conservative party, none remotely desirable.
The Tories of the English and Scottish landed classes became “Conservatives” after Sir Robert Peel’s Tamworth Manifesto in 1834, when he sought to broaden the party’s appeal to the middle classes enfranchised after the Great Reform Bill; and they have just suffered the worst defeat ever.
